Stewardship

Stewardship is an integral year-round objective within the SWCD mission. Each spring districts across the U.S. join in sharing with their communities information on a specific, engaging stewardship theme in the areas of soil health, water quality, pollinator habitat, or other conservation topics.

The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) identifies and promotes the theme to increase awareness about the importance of natural resource conservation. The Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) sponsors the theme at the state level and works with the local districts to inform the public on key takeaways. Youth have the opportunity to learn more about the subject and submit original essays and posters for the district's theme-based contest.

In addition to these youth awards, the district may recognize individuals in a variety of categories for their stewardship efforts. This annual stewardship theme culminates with a weeklong series of educational public service announcements and the signing of the stewardship week proclamation by county officials. This "Stewardship Week" has been held annually since 1955 between the last Sunday in April and the first Sunday in May.

The overall goal of stewardship week is to promote and recognize our individual responsibilities to care for our natural resources.
