3rd Grade Social Studies
3rd Grade Social Studies
In the 3rd grade, students will engage in interdisciplinary units that encompass various aspects of social studies, including history, geography, economics, civics, and personal financial literacy. Through these units, students will develop a deeper understanding of the world around them, how societies function, and the importance of responsible citizenship. Students will understand the impact of exchange on individuals, businesses, and communities, and discuss how trade benefits individuals, businesses, and communities and promotes interdependency. Students will locate and identify oceans, continents, major countries, bodies of water, mountains, urban areas, the state of Colorado, and neighboring states on maps, describe the natural and human-made features of a specific area on a map, and observe and describe the physical, cultural, and human-made characteristics of a local region. Students will compare primary and secondary sources to understand the past and its influence on different communities and regions and identify and describe significant people, events, and developments that have brought about important changes in a community or region. Students will discuss the origins, structures, and functions of local government and explore the roles of leaders, citizens, and others in local government. Additionally, they will foster respect for the views and rights of others. Throughout the course, students will actively engage in various activities, discussions, and research to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and citizenship skills. They will learn to analyze information from diverse sources, understand the interplay between geography and society, explore economic principles, respect the rights and opinions of others, and develop personal financial literacy skills. This comprehensive approach to social studies will empower students to become informed, responsible, and active participants in their communities and the world.
