1st Grade Social Studies
The 1st grade social studies curriculum is an interdisciplinary program that integrates standards from history, geography, economics, civics, and personal financial literacy. Throughout the course, students will develop a solid foundation of knowledge about the past, the world around them, economic concepts, civic engagement, and personal financial literacy. They will explore various topics, including historical events, diverse cultures, communities, jobs, responsible leadership, and money management. Students will explore geography by using geographic terms and tools to describe communities and understand how they are influenced by the environment. They will create simple maps and explore how individuals and families interact with their environment. Students will analyze how weather, climate, and environmental characteristics influence individuals and cultural characteristics of families. Additionally, they will compare and contrast different families in terms of schools, neighborhoods, and culture. Students will learn how leaders and team members communicate, the qualities of effective teams, and the importance of listening and considering others' ideas when making group decisions. Students will identify and explain the relevance of notable civic leaders, civic symbols, significant civic places, and major civic holidays from diverse community groups. They will explore the jobs held by family members and individuals in their community and compare the benefits and costs of different job choices. Students will learn how to plan how to spend, share, and save money, and they will find the value of a collection of two coins. They will dive into history, asking questions and discussing events from the past using primary and secondary sources. They will learn how diverse perspectives shaped the United States and arrange life events in chronological order. By the end of 1st grade, students will have developed a foundation of knowledge and skills in history, geography, economics, civics, and personal financial literacy.
