Middle school students comprised of 6th, 7th and 8th grades begin to analyze works of literature and are challenged to write clearly and purposefully while utilizing grade-appropriate grammar and mechanics. The study of geography, U.S. and World History help students to evaluate the world around them and discover God's purpose for their life in it. Students also begin investigating the world around them through the study of God's creation with Earth, Life and Physical sciences. Earth Sciences study earthquakes, volcanoes, erosion, weathering of rocks, water cycles, and meteorology. Life Sciences include the study of cell structure, physiology, micro-organisms, classifications, plant structure and function, animals, human anatomy and physiology. Our students also explore mathematical concepts that begin preparing them for SAT, ACT, and high school curriculum. Curriculum in junior high is a mix of Abeka, Bob Jones and other Christian based resources.
Technology is integrated into our educational programs at an early age at SCS. Middle school students receive instruction in Computers Science, digital citizenship, software application, and introduction to programming.
While technology is an important educational tool, we believe balance matters. Current research is beginning to show that constant 1:1 device use is not always healthy for cognitive development, particularly in children and adolescents. Studies indicate that written work, reading from print, and hands-on learning experiences often lead to stronger focus, deeper understanding, and better long-term retention of information than screen-based learning alone.
Additionally, limiting 1:1 devices helps us provide an added layer of protection from inappropriate or distracting online content that can be more easily accessed through personal devices. Our goal is to create a safe, focused learning environment that supports both academic growth and student well-being.
That said, technology is still thoughtfully integrated into instruction. Students have access to a computer lab and media center, which are used for guided instruction, research, and online learning when it enhances educational outcomes. This approach allows us to teach responsible technology use while prioritizing strong foundational learning skills.
Junior high is more than a transition between elementary and high school—it is a formative season where students develop habits of thinking, learning, and discernment that will shape their future. At Sumiton Christian School, we approach these years with great care, providing a Christ-centered, nurturing environment that supports students academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
Middle school is the perfect time to join the Sumiton Christian School family, as students begin discovering their interests, gifts, and where they truly belong. These years provide an exciting opportunity to explore a wide range of extracurriculars—from music, art, and band to competitive athletics beginning in 7th grade. Students can take the field or court in baseball, basketball, cheer, color guard, cross country, football, golf, majorettes, softball, and volleyball, building confidence, discipline, and teamwork along the way. With a history of multiple championship titles and award-winning performances, SCS offers a supportive, Christ-centered environment where students can find their niche, grow their talents, and experience the joy of being part of something bigger than themselves.
