Science at Sturgis High School (Overview)
Freshman Science: Chemistry A: This course is an introduction to science at the high school level. Topics covered will include matter, forces, energy, waves, Earth’s place in the universe, Earth systems, and Earth and human activities. Atomic structure and trends in the periodic table will also
Conceptual Chemistry: This course is designed so that students may view chemistry more conceptually. They will visualize atoms and molecules’ behavior and learn how this behavior gives rise to our macroscopic world. Chemistry concepts are developed through application, hands-on practice, analogies and illustrations. This course will challenge students’ understanding of chemistry concepts and their ability to synthesize and articulate conclusions
Chemistry: **Prerequisite: Geometry and Biology with at least a “C” average ** Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes that take place in matter. Topics studied include the following: metric system, atomic structure, chemical bonding, mole concept, gas laws, nomenclature, and the periodic table of the elements. Basic laboratory experimentation and the use of algebra skills in problem-solving is a class expectation. This course is recommended for upper-level and college-bound students. Second-semester students will investigate chemical equilibrium, enthalpy, entropy, reduction/oxidation chemistry, and acid/base chemistry.
Biology: Biology is a more rigorous and in-depth course designed to familiarize the college-bound student with basic biological ideas. Biology examines the topics of the chemistry of life, ecology, cellular structure, photosynthesis, respiration, genetics, heredity, classification, and the structure and development of plants and animals. The course is designed to enable each student to engage in various experiences to study biology, including outdoor and indoor laboratory sessions, reading assignments, and evaluation exercises to develop skills in scientific observation and reasoning. This class fulfills the requirements of the State of Michigan High School content expectations for Biology.
Freshman Science: Physics A: This course is an introduction to science at the high school level. Topics covered will include matter, forces, energy, waves, Earth’s place in the universe, Earth systems, and Earth and human activities. Atomic structure and trends in the periodic table will also
Physics: **Prerequisite: Geometry and Biology with at least a “C” average ** Physics may be taken concurrently with Algebra II. This course provides an analytically based exposure to the fundamental principles and laws of physics. It uses algebra and trigonometry-based models to explore the fundamental concepts that describe the physical world. Topics include the motion of objects (Kinematics), forces and motion (Dynamics), forms of energy and energy transformations (Work and Energy) and simple harmonic motion, mechanical waves, and sound (Oscillations and Waves). Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the foundational physics concepts.
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY 1 CREDIT This course teaches the structures of the human body. Topics include introduction terms, body sections, homeostasis, and characteristics of life. Body systems covered include Skeletal, Muscle, Cardiovascular/Circulatory, and Nervous systems. Written as well as practicum style tests will be given. This course is offered as a year long class.
