Spanish : This is a study of the Spanish-speaking peoples’ language, customs, and history. Through online and physical texts, films, independent projects, skits, and games, students will develop reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills in Spanish. They will create a workable vocabulary and acceptably express themselves with proper grammar and reasonably accurate pronunciation. A willingness to participate actively both in and out of class is necessary
Spanish II: Spanish II students will continue work begun in Spanish I by expanding their vocabulary and controlling the written and spoken language. Intensive grammar study will start, and oral communication will be more frequent and natural. Students will learn verbs in several tenses. Study of the cultures will continue to be stressed and comprehension of written articles in the target language. Students will also complete independent projects with the integration of technology. A willingness to participate actively both in and out of class is necessary.
SPANISH III (GOCC LNG 163) 1 CREDIT **Prerequisite: “C” average or better in Spanish II. ** Spanish III is designed to further the language abilities begun in the first two years of study. Students will increase comprehension and further develop grammar through typical everyday communications—composition, spontaneous conversation, and listening exercises. Students will learn more about the preterit, imperfect, the present subjunctive tense, and the imperative. Increased awareness of the contemporary life and cultures of Spanish-speaking peoples is also a goal of the course. It may be taken for Glen Oaks dual enrollment credit.
SPANISH IV (GOCC LNG 261) 1 CREDIT This course is a deeper study of the Spanish language. It allows students to review previous concepts and enhance their understanding of advanced grammar and vocabulary. Students will learn to review much of the grammar concepts, including the future, conditional, subjunctive, imperfect, and preterit past tenses. Spanish IV also stresses writing as well as the practical application of the language and spontaneous conversation. A willingness to communicate entirely in the language is necessary. Continued study of Hispanic customs and cultures is emphasized. May be taken for Glen Oaks dual enrollment credit.
German : This is a fundamental introduction to the German language. Emphasis is placed on all five learning skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar, facilitated by oral work in class, videos, projects, and presentations. Class activities reinforce grammatical concepts. Movies and current events are used to acquaint students with German culture and history. Students will complete several projects and will be required to speak in German for certain assignments.
