Ceramics: (May be repeated once at a more advanced level) 5 CREDIT Ceramics encourages students to use clay in all its potential forms. Specific work will be done in hand-built and wheel-thrown techniques. Firing methods and glaze techniques will also be taught. As students continue, emphasis will be on wheel-thrown pottery construction techniques.
Jewelry: (May be repeated once at a more advanced level) .5 CREDIT Basic jewelry instructs students in process coordination for designing and making handcrafted jewelry. Sawing, filing, soldering, polishing, and casting will be taught. Brass, copper, and silver will be used in various project exercises. As students continue, emphasis will be placed on expanding each technique. A fee charged for students wishing to use gemstones and/or sterling silver.
Photography .5 CREDIT Photography will provide an introduction to the camera and how it functions as well as guidelines for composing and evaluating. These skills will be utilized in a variety of art exercises stressing elements and principles of design. Photography is a more advanced art course that will explore the artistic merits of this method of visual communication via a digital SLR camera.
Video Production (May repeat with instructor permission) .5 CREDIT **Suggested prerequisite: Photography** This art class will engage students with current trends in video and computer graphics. Skills in computer imaging will be explored students will be involved in producing a daily video production (Trojan Vision), and using non-linear video editing software to produce special projects.
Sculpture: Click through the slide show. (May be repeated once at a more advanced level) .5 CREDIT This art class explores and applies the elements and principles of design through historical trends in sculpture. Students will utilize a variety of materials, from plaster to wood, to found objects. This class is a must for the serious art student or for the student who enjoys hands-on projects.
Art Appreciation: Click through the slide show. Glen Oaks Dual Enrollment – Humanities Credit .5 CREDIT **Accuplacer Test or acceptable ACT/SAT score required for dual enrollment credit** Art Appreciation provides a basic historical overview from prehistoric times to the present day. Observation and interpretation of significant historical periods and artworks will be emphasized. Some hands-on projects will be included in this mostly academically orientated class. A field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago is often taken. This class may be taken for Glen Oaks dual enrollment credit. No artistic ability is required – just an interest to learn about art.
Painting: Click through the slide show. (May be repeated once at a more advanced level) .5 CREDIT Painting provides opportunities for students to understand the fundamental techniques of painting. Media such as tempera, watercolor, and acrylics will be included. Emphasis will also be placed on color theory and historical trends. Drawing I recommended as a prerequisite.
Drawing: Click through the slide show. (May be repeated once at a more advanced level) .5 CREDIT Drawing provides opportunities for students to develop perceptual and expressive skills. Instruction is presented in drawing techniques and media such as pencil, charcoal, pastels, color pencils, oil pastels, marker, and ink. As students continue, emphasis is on drawing from direct observation.
