Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calc, Probability & Statistics, Calculus:
ALGEBRA I 1 CREDIT ** Prerequisite: Passed 8th-grade mathematics or permission of the instructor. ** Algebra I provides a formal development of the algebraic skills and concepts necessary for students to succeed in advanced courses. Students will use the skills they’ve learned in a wide variety of problem-solving applications. The concept of function is emphasized throughout the course.
GEOMETRY 1 CREDIT **Prerequisite: Passing grade in Algebra 1 or permission of the instructor. ** Students will review and use concepts learned in previous math courses as they investigate new geometric concepts. Students are encouraged to reason logically and think critically as they learn how to present formal proof. Geometric properties of both two and three dimensions are emphasized as they apply to points, lines, planes, circles, and polygons. This is the second of four math credits required for graduation at Sturgis High School.
ALGEBRA II 1 CREDIT **Prerequisite: Passing grade in both Algebra I and Geometry ** In this course, students will move beyond linear and quadratic functions to study more advanced topics. Using transformations, students will investigate higher-level functions, (such as rational, polynomial, radical and exponential), and learn how to apply them in context. This course is the third of four math credits required for graduation from Sturgis High School.
PRE-CALCULUS 1 CREDIT **Prerequisite: C+ or better in Algebra II or permission of the instructor. ** This course brings together and extends many of the concepts and skills covered in previous math courses. Students will continue the study of algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and other function-based concepts. This course is essential in preparing students for their transition to college mathematics and is essential for those students who intend to pursue technical college majors.
PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS 1 CREDIT **Prerequisite: D+ or better in Algebra II or permission of the instructor.** This course will include a study of Combinatorics (Counting Methods), Probability, Statistics, and other areas of mathematics such as Financial Literacy, Graph Theory, and Apportionment (Voting Methods). Emphasis will be placed on using these concepts in applied situations. This class is a good foundational class for any student interested in non-technical college majors.
