The name of the book I recently completed is The Storm Of Echoes by Christelle Dabos. The book is the fourth and final book in the Mirror Visitor Quartet. In the book, the main character Ophelia and her husband Thorn continue their hidden, but beloved partnership to finally put an end to their quest of trying to understand the incomprehensible code of the mysterious entity called God, the creator of the Family Spirits that reign over each unique ark, and the perplexing entity of the Other, whose power threatens and continues to bring down the fragment pieces of the earth, the Arks. This series is amazing, and to read this book you're going to have to read the other three installments before this one, but they're all equally just as great. One of my favorite things about this series is the fact that the characters are dynamic, interesting, and real. Ophelia has qualities that you'd wish everyone you encounter had. She's empathetic, honest, intelligent, self-aware, and most importantly she takes accountability, admits her mistakes, and actively tries to find ways to fix them. Thorn is a stoic and complex individual that is tough to crack, but as you read, you can't help but root for him, too. He’s meticulous, analytical, and calculating and would do anything for Ophelia and his Aunt Bernhilde. In my opinion, the first two books (A Winter’s Promise and The Missing of Clairdelune) are the best books in the series as they allow you to fully immerse yourselves in the world and story as you learn the ins and outs of these characters.
During literacy month we planned and created different activities to help engage students in the month of literacy to help spark their joy in reading once again. Before we began planning anything we had to research information about reading and the benefits of it. We used the research model Wonder, Investigate, Sythenize, & Expression to help guide or research and find information. Every Week we added to our research and created surveys to find out which parts of literacy and reading our school's student body would be the most interested in. Using the results from the surveys, our group was able to sift through different activities and we were able to plan and collaborate on activities around their general interest. Something I think worked well was the Slinkies hunt, based on what I’ve seen I think it was pretty successful. Roles that I served throughout literacy month would include, hiding slinkies, creating flyers and promotions, hanging up the banner, and using my creative eye to help finish the manga wall.
My favorite part of literacy month was being able to create and design different things, I enjoyed making the book spine, helping out with the lettering of the banner, and tracing and painting anime characters on the manga wall; I truly enjoyed contributing to those projects. Something that I think we could do better is getting teacher cooperation, (have teachers share in classrooms what is happening during literacy month every week), and better announcements promoting. I think this will impact students at KHS because it will give students something to look forward to during April and provides them with the opportunities to win prizes throughout the month.
For our final exam, my class and I created a presentation that we would present to illustrate and present our findings and successes of Literacy Month and what we did. In the presentation, we went over our eWISE research and application process on how we helped contribute to and advertise literacy month to our student body at KHS. In the presentation, I specifically worked on the Investigate slide which gave more in-depth details about what our original research concluded and why our students have certain attitudes toward reading. Our presentation also went over different activities we implemented in order to encourage reading which included Get Caught Reading, Slinky Recommendations, LC Unplugged, & other engaging activities. Overall, I believe our approach was successful for the most part and we were able to increase student engagement.
