For this creative project, I created a book spine for Literacy Month. The book I chose to do is Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. For the book spine, I wanted to create something reminiscent of the original design of the book cover. With that in mind, I tried to make my outline as similar to the book cover as possible in a way I could replicate onto the actual vinyl of the spine. The trickiest part for me when trying to recreate my outline was getting the ombre or gradient of the letters right. Though it's not perfect, I'm proud that I was able to mimic it the best I could. I also had to figure out a way to create the blast of red and blue on the vinyl. I knew I wasn't going to be able to recreate what was on my outline, so I had to figure out another way to represent the appearance of Bree's powers. I decided to use swirls of blue and red to show the essence and fluidity of her powers. The Pendragon amulet symbolizes a vital part of the story, so I wanted to include that element in my spine also.
The goal of this project was to create a social media post to help promote and encourage students to participate in Literacy Month. The challenging thing about this project was trying to put as much information as I could without crowding the post and making it too overwhelming to read. Juggling that while also designing the promotion to embody the spirit of the theme itself required me to spend a bit more time editing it to make sure it came out looking as organized as I wanted it. I learned that if you want things to come out well you have to spend time and put effort into it.
