For this project, we created our own literature podcasts, and I chose to focus mine on Beloved by Toni Morrison. After listening to and analyzing two professional literature podcasts, I outlined my own using a podcast guide and centered my argument around the theme of freedom. I explored how Morrison shows that escaping slavery doesn’t mean someone is truly free; the emotional and psychological trauma still lingers long after physical escape. Recording the episode helped me connect this idea to real-life experiences and historical patterns in Black American history. I also designed a thumbnail that symbolized the novel’s deeper meanings, using tree branches to represent the scars on Sethe’s back and a gravestone for Beloved’s burial site. Listening to classmates’ work was also a highlight, my favorite was Kaniyah’s podcast “Chains, Letters, and Ghost,” which also took a look at autonomy and freedom in comparison of both Beloved and The Color Purple. This project helped me see how storytelling, especially through podcasting, can bring literature to life in new and personal ways.
