Peer interview project
I chose the boba and spring for Alexis, Fall leaves for Brenna, headphones for Bianca and paws, art and paint brushes for all of them. On the color palette I included paint dolops for everyones favorite colors. I decided to combine the elements by making a collage. I used alcohol markers and color pencils, then I cut them out and stuck them on a piece of paper.
What are the positive and negative attributes of gouache?
Positive: its diversity in how to use it, it acts as both water color and acrylic
Negative: everytime you add another layer, it reactivates the previous layers.
Will you use gouache again? What would you use it for? Why?
I would use it for landscapes because the techniques mostly resonate with landscapes rather than still life or portraits.
Rate your final painting on a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the best and 1 the worst. Please explain why you rated it the way you did.
I'd rate my piece 7/10 because there's certainly things I could've done better. I would make the background more smooth and work on the shadow some more, maybe use a lighter green for the background. Overall I think I did a good job blending the apple but I'd definitely redo it if I got the opportunity to.
Pigment suspended in oil
Highly blendable
Impasto (thick paint application)
Brilliant in color
You can work on it over months because its slow drying
I chose oil paint because I really liked it when we did practice paintings. I've never done oil before so I thought it would be interesting to try it. The artist I chose is Jacques-Louis David and I really liked his painting "Oath of Horatii" because of his use of dramatic lighting. I decided to make this piece because I did this concept using digital art and I thought it would be a cool idea to try using oil paint. I made the digital piece in honor of women's history month so the same idea translated over to this piece. I really like how the overall piece turned out, I think the lighting and the wings look good but I wish I made the face details more prominent. They are present when they are up close but when it's far away, it blends in together so I'd change that. Overall I think this piece was successful but could definitely be improved.
Three things that are important about figure drawing are: composition, perspective and dimensions. My topic was "Getting lost in a story" and I used digital art to execute this idea. Something I really tried to capture was story through light. Something I liked is the overall composition and lighting of the piece but I feel like I could have captured more details for the background plan.
Artist statement
My artwork addresses imposter syndrome and I intend on it to ask the viewer what they feel, do they relate to it, do they know anyone else who may feel this way? I interviewed different people with questions about the feeling, some were “Do you feel like it is pushed on to you or the feeling creeps up and slowly pulls you in?” and “do you think this feeling will always be with you or you’ll grow out if it eventually?” I chose to make a character out of my imagination because it seemed more convenient than drawing someone I knew. I also asked my peers about the colors they associate with winning versus when they experience imposter syndrome and I used those colors on both sides. I used the child version of the character to show symbolism of how he has experienced this feeling since he was a child. I wanted to try a simpler art style so I didn’t go as into detail with the anatomical features, I felt like since the symbolism is heavy, making it less cluttered would make it easier to conceptualize. Overall I wanted to convey how sometimes people feel like they didn’t earn a win, or they doubt their abilities. How this usually starts when you’re younger and it’s present while you go through out life. Most people who experience this, also have a high expectation of themselves alongside perfectionism which causes them to overly criticize themselves, and I think I was able to capture this feeling.
What page or pages are you the most happy with? Please explain why.
I'm most happy with the page with the winged victory because I think I did really well with that sketch. It was an unplanned piece and I really think I executed it really well.
How did you experiment as part of your art-making process? What did you learn, and how did you apply it in your work? Examples: learning a new process by trying something and making changes/ revisions, fixing a mistake by problem solving, or figuring out how to use media in a new way.
Making the book from scratch and linoleum block printing was a new part of my art-making process. I learnt how to carve properly in the linoleum block. I tried it in freshman year and could not execute the idea I had planned so I think I did it a lot better this time.
Will you continue to use your journal? If not, why? If yes, how?
No, I will not continue to use it because it feels complete, I've binded the pages together and it's a messy composition of everything I could think of in the moment and I really like it.
Rate this unit from 1 - 10 (10 being wonderful). Explain your rating.
7/10, I really liked the unit but I think I could have done more with the pieces. I really like my first three pages because I executed the prompts really well but the last two could be better, overall I really like how it turned out.
Question 1: How did you approach the challenge of creating an artwork with limited time and limited materials? What did you think about as you selected your items from the cornucopia? How successful was your work at the end? How did this challenge impact your creative process? Include images of the work
I selected color pencils, paper and a pen from the cornucopia. These materials were very easy to work with because I'm familiar with all of them. I think it was successful in the end because I was able to transfer my idea clearly on to paper. The colors worked really well together but I didn't end up using the pen due to the time restrain so if I had as much time as I needed I might've used it. This challenge helped me go straight into working without overthinking and just make something. It forced me to create something and I really like the idea of grabbing random materials and just going in to working because it helped me break out of artblock I've been having for a while.
Question 2: What project in Art 3 did you learn the most from? Describe what you learned and how you applied it. Include a related image
I believe I learned the most from my oil painting "Angel". I'd never worked with oil before this class so this was a challenge. I wanted to recreate a digital piece I'd made before. I learned how to use oil and add strong lighting and paint anatomy since I'd never painted a person before. I decided to use oil because I was inspired by the Oath of Horatii by Louis David because of his art style. I really wanted to incorporate his use of light and I think I accomplished that pretty well. I also challenged myself with the size of the canvas, I'd never really worked with big canvases before and usually drew very small. Overall I think this was a very successful piece because it helped me grow as an artist.
Question 3: Think about where you are as an artist and art student. What are areas of strength for you? What are areas of growth for you (things you would like to be stronger in)? Describe at least three areas. Include a related image.
I think I'm a pretty decent artist and art student. My strengths are the mediums I work in but something I could improve in is trying to challenge myself more often instead of remaining comfortable. I've been trying to expand my art style over the last few years and even though it's been pretty stagnant for a while now I think this class has helped me improve. I also want to be better at creating narratives with my artwork because being able to tell a story through art is really important to me. I also really want to be able to accept that some artworks aren't going to be the best and be okay with just creating art.
Question 4: What are your goals as an artist? Think about next year and the future. Describe your goals and list some steps that you want to make sure you take to accomplish them. Include images that illustrate each.
I'm taking art 4 and AP 2D in senior year and I'd like to get a 4 or 5 on the portfolio. I also want to sell my artwork in the future, through commissions and art shows so I think taking AP 2D would help gain experience. I also have an art Instagram that I don't post on often but I plan on posting more frequently over the summer. I want to be able to create a name for myself as an artist and I think taking these steps to create more engagement on social media and taking higher level art classes will help me in the future.
Question 5: What was good about Art 3? What could have made it better?
Art 3 was a really amazing opportunity to learn how to create original artworks and learn how to present work. I think the presentation in the courtyard, group discussions and display at boba and cha really helped build my confidence as an artist. Taking our own reference photos also really helped making ideas come to life in the figure drawing unit. I think maybe creating more games like the final exam would really help create more engaging in the class. Overall I think this is a really good class to help prepare students for AP art and a career in art.
