Forensic Science is an on-site event where teams demonstrate their knowledge of forensic science and crime scene analysis. Participants take a test of basic forensic science theory to qualify as semifinalists who then examine a mock crime scene. Participants are expected to survey the scene and use proper techniques to collect evidence from the mock crime scene. Teams then collect their data and perform a detailed written analysis of the crime scene.
Team members take the test individually.
Team members have one (1) hour to complete the test.
The tests are taken digitally before the conference for regionals and states, and on-site at nationals.
Teams analyze and document a crime scene and then provide their synthesis in a written report.
Team should bring their own toolkit with the following items:
Roll of string
Safety glasses (2 pairs)
Tape measure (10 m)
Tweezers
Scissors
Crime scene template
Flashlight
Pen or fine-point marker (for labeling)
Pencils
Evidence collection bags
Gloves
Participants must be able to complete (at a minimum) the following:
Conduct a primary survey of the crime scene.
Process a crime scene.
Collect evidence and keep detailed documentation.
Record and preserve evidence.
Collect trace evidence
Create a proportional drawing that accurately represents the crime scene.
