In Engineering Design, you and your team will develop a solution to one of the Grand Challenges for Engineering based on the annual theme. You and your team will develop a prototype/model of your solution, a display to highlight key components of your design, as well as document the entire design process in a documentation portfolio.
All elements of this event should be submitted on the day of the conference.
2025-2025 Theme
Engineering the tools of scientific discovery.
Being able to use CAD software such as Onshape or Fusion 360 will enable you to design your model/prototype with specific measurements and design drawings.
You are required to submit a USB flash drive with a PDF of your portfolio of the entire design process and the steps you and your team took to come up with your final prototype.

Free-standing display
May not exceed 15" deep x 3' wide x 4' high
A tangible prototype/model
If power is required, must use dry-cell batteries or photo-voltaic cells
Onshape - Easy to use and learn
Fusion 360 - More functions than Onshape, but moderately easy to use
Problem Statement: Clear description and outline of the issue
User Needs: What the final user requires from the solution
Constraints: Unchangeable limits
Design Brief: Plan summarizing the goals, key needs, and constraints
Ideation: Brainstorming possible solutions
Mock-up: A low-detail tangible model
Prototype: A functional tangible model
Iteration: Making improvements on design based on test results
Efficiency: Useful output to input ratio
