This roll of film was by far my favorite to take. Obviously the freedom around the project helped, but more than that, I liked going out to portland, where I would use most of the roll. My mom and I and my dog all went out just before the traditional ‘Golden Hour’, and we were worried there wouldn’t be enough light to take photos. But we followed the sunset out to Casco Bay off 295. The image I chose to enlarge was the only one I could get while my dog was sitting still. I knew that the beautiful colors of the sunset wouldn’t show up, but could help to backlight the subject, my dog. I got her to sit near the shoreline, and got lower to the ground to take it. I used a softer focus in hopes that something of the sunset, it’s incredible softness, would be preserved. The formal balance gave my subject the spotlight and since she’s a black dog, the silhouetting worked really well. I think this photo is fitting for my final enlarged photography image. It has a little bit of my style everywhere: My dog as the subject because I am slightly obsessed; the twigs and branches sticking around here and there; and the expansive landscape in the background. The image is entirely me and my style. I don’t think I would change it.
