Artist Statement

The idea behind this piece was for it to represent the chaos of emotions that people feel. For the abstract shapes, I chose to stick with mostly reds, oranges, yellows, and pinks to represent happier emotions, and the greens, blues, and purples to represent sadder emotions. Then I went back in a few areas with some black watercolor and let it drip and splat because I wanted it to feel like something darker and messier was taking over these 'normal' emotions. For the shoe buckle where the label runs across the bottom, I just kept it pretty simple and solid. I didn't want to do anything too crazy, because I didn't want it to feel like there was too much going on.

The materials I chose to create this piece were markers, sharpie, and watercolors. I chose to fill in the background shapes with marker because they are pretty vibrant and easy to work with. I used a metallic sharpie to outline the background shapes and a black sharpie to fill in the letters with zentangle designs. Lastly I chose to use watercolors because I know how easy it is for it to drip and splat which was something that I wanted my piece to have to help build up the theme that things can get chaotic and uncontrollable.

This project was like the final thing that summed up the last few assignments. We first chose a shoe to draw three different profile contours front, top, and side, I chose to draw my Birkenstock. We then used a viewfinder and zoomed in on one particular part of a drawing and scaled it to a different piece of paper and repeated that step two more times. After that we chose one zoomed in contour that we liked and transferred onto a piece of bristol board. For my piece I chose to create an abstract piece with some zentangle patterns mixed in as well. This piece isn't exact what I originally had in mind, I wish that I planned out my colors and designs a little more. If I were to do this project again, I would also pick a different, more complex shoe to draw, I felt like the Birkenstock was a little too simple.
