Artist Statement

Our first art assignment this school year was was to use a WhatchamaDRAWit prompt and come up with to portray that prompt. The prompt I received was to draw a candy bar that makes you super silly. At first I had no idea what I was going to draw, there are so many different ways of approaching this prompt. I thought about drawing a candy bar and putting a comedian or a funny actor on the wrapper. That's when I came up with the idea to base my drawing off of Danny Devito and I remembered that he was in an M&M commercial. M&M’s are one of my favorite candies and I absolutely love the M&M characters in the commercials so I knew that Danny Devito as an M&M would be a perfect interpretation of my prompt.

For this piece I grabbed the materials closest to me, a small sketch pad and Ticonderoga pencil. I personally like using pencils to sketch because they are literally everywhere in my house and I don't really care for the mess that other materials sometimes make. Using pencil is very much within my comfort zone, this year I hope to work more with things that aren't such as charcoal.

After I made the decision to draw Danny Devito as an M&M I needed to figure out how I was going to actually do it. I finally ended up with the concept of the red M&M but with Danny Devito features such as his glasses, nose, and hair. I stared out by just drawing a circle in the middle of the page, keeping in mind the space I would need for the arms and legs. After I drew some guidelines and began to sketch out his features. Once I was finished with the outlines of everything I came across a problem which was whether or not i wanted to use color. In the end I decided to stick with shading, but at some point I would like to try and add color. Over all I am pretty satisfied with this piece, looking back at it there are a few things that I should correct, such as the shading and maybe add some more details.
