Beautiful Oops

Beautiful Oops Flowers

Artist Statement

These flowers were inspired by splats of ink on a piece of paper. When I first saw the slapts of ink in the paper I had no idea what to with them, the possibilities are endless. I knew I wanted to stick with watercolors because they are tricky and I tend to create lot of 'oopses' with them. I don't exactly know why I chose to create flowers, but I really liked playing around with the colors. Some of the inspiration behind these flowers is the work of Georgia O'Keeffe's. I really love and admire her work, and she is one of my favorite artists.

For this piece I chose to use watercolors because they tend to make a lot of 'beautiful oops' on their own. Often times I find the colors blending together, or when you add some paint something completely different than what you plans happens, sometimes you like it other times you have to find ways to work it into your piece. But it's all part of the joy of art and experimenting with new things. I personally enjoyed using watercolors for this piece, I think that the suggested lines made with a pen added a lot of depth to the flowers making parts of them pop.

This piece started as three ink spats on a piece of paper and slowly evolved into a cluster of flowers. I have to say, figuring out what I was going to make was the hardest part of this project, but once I knew that I wanted to make flowers the rest of this piece was really fun to create. I really liked playing around with the watercolors and trying a few different techniques including putting the water down first and layering colors then adding water on top to blend them. Something that I was originally planning to do was to fill the background with all sorts of patterns to contract the simplicity of the flowers against a busy background. But I am still satisfied with this piece.
