Artist Statement:

For this project, we had to create a piece that included eighty-four colors, the twelve colors of the color wheel, and three shades and three shades for each. For my design, I wanted to break it up into three different canvases each having a primary color. All three pieces have a mountain line that runs across all three canvases that gives them a consistent component along with the moons, then for each of the skies do something different. I chose moons to represent all the main colors of the color wheel because there are twelve moon phases and twelve colors. I also wanted to have a day cycle theme. The first canvas represents dawn. I decided to start with the color blue and start to flow more to the reds like the sun rising bringing more cheerful colors. For the sky, I decided to do a light to dark gradient moving up to represent the sun rising. For the second panel, I used all the red and orange colors and colors radiating from the center to represent the day and the sun's beams. For the third panel, I used yellows and greens. This time the sky's colors go from light to dark gradient moving down to representing the night sky coming up from behind the mountains.

The materials I used for this piece were acrylic paints on canvas and a sharpie. I found that some of the acrylic paints were very opaque while others you had to layer on a bunch of times. I did find myself to be very impatient and sometimes didn't wait for the paint to fully dry so in some places it looks a little textured. I just used the sharpie to separate the colors and to have neater lines, towards the end my sharpie's ink was running out and they were also very cold which I can imagine helped when I was trying to outline but overall I think that it looks okay.

When brainstorming ideas for this piece I knew I wanted to do something with mountains then the moons came to me after when looking at room decor online. When I first sketched out what I wanted my piece to look like a had several different ideas of how I wanted things to look. I started painting my first panel when I realized that I didn't like my first design. I decided to change it a bit. That's when I took inspiration from the Falcon Pride wall behind the school. I really liked how those mountains looked and I wanted something more consistent throughout the piece, but I wanted to make it differ from the schools. I ended up on a more rolling mountain design and overall I really like this piece.
