Artist Statement:

The big idea behind this piece was to honor and represent Ruth Bader Ginsburg and what she did and believed in. Although part of this piece is abstract, I tried to add many symbolic elements. I put similar spikes like the ones in the statue of liberty's crown to compare her to the statue of liberty which represents freedom and a safe place for all because she spent a lot of her life fighting for equal rights for all. The pride flag represents how she fought for LGBTQ+ rights. The pink wall represents how she broke a lot of barriers, especially when it came to women's rights. And the sky represents how the sky is the limit and it's important to fight for what you believe in because you can make a difference.

The materials I used for this piece were acrylic paints on canvas. I like using acrylic but there are a few things that I don't really like, or just didn't prefer for this piece in particular and one is how quickly it dries. There were a few places in my piece where it was important to mix the colors on the canvas such as in the clouds, and I had to rush it because it dries so quickly.

The process behind this piece was a longer than anticipated process. I had to find pictures from magazines to cut out then had to figure out how I wanted to place them onto my paper. Also when I started to have an idea of what I wanted to do, I started looking for specific things that I thought I should add but couldn't really find what I was looking for. When I finally had everything on my paper and started to paint I did change a few things. One was I stretched the landscape piece so it would reach the other end of the paper, then I chanced the flag that was previously there with only four colors to six. Overall I think that this piece turned out okay, there are a few things that I would like to change such as some of the colors because they didn't dry the color I was hoping they would.
