Artist statement

I chose to draw my kitchen looking into my pantry because it had a few different rooms and I just liked the perspective. After I finished the basics of the room, the walls, the floors, windows, and other big objects, I got to get a little creative. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to add to the drawing, but I ended up replacing one of the plants from the original photo with a portal with tentacles coming out of it, which is the inspiration behind the name of this piece. I also tried to add color to certain objects that I thought were important, but I honestly don't really like how it turned out. I think I am going to continue working on this piece and add more fantastical creatures and more color to the piece.

The materials I used in this piece were an assortment of graphite pencils, colored pencils and bristol board. I also used a ruled to make sure that my lines were all straight, this helped make sure that everything continued to stay in the correct perspective all angled at the same view point. When I first started drawing the room I used a 2H pencil and made sure that all my lines were super light so I could erase the excess ones later on. After I finished sketching out all the details I wanted in the room, I then went over the sketched lines with a few different B pencils to darken the lines. I used probably used an HB pencil the most to go over the lines because the graphite is more pigmented but still hard enough to prevent smudging. I used colored pencils because they are a material that I haven't really worked with this year and I would like to use them more often. They are also nice to layer and shade with.

For this unit we worked on perspectives. As you can see in the first two images above, 1 Point Perspective and 2 point perspective we just started out with the basics, learning how to draw simple 3D shapes in a 2D area. We then started to draw a room on a separate piece of paper, really learning the process of how to create a realistic and proportional drawing using perspective. For our final project, we were assigned to take a picture of a hallway in the school to draw, but since I am a remote learner, I got to decide which room in my house I got to draw, which I liked better. I also like how when you draw something that you walk through or pass by everyday, it can bring a new perspective to your attention which I think pretty cool. Like I mentioned before I will probably add more to this drawing in my free time just so I can be more satisfied with it.
