Zoomed Shoe Drawing

For this piece of artwork, we were given the prompt to use lines from a zoomed image drawn from our pure contour shoe drawings. We used these lines to create an artwork with filling in space and using the shapes and given lines. Some of my lines in the zoomed image I used had curves, so I created an eye.

To begin putting my thoughts onto paper, I used a 4H graphite pencil to make light sketches. I was very unsure about this project, and had a very long thought process to start my drawing. I spent a FULL class period unable to form the slightest ideas. After sketching, I erased extra unneeded lines and drew one line splitting the drawing into two sides. I started with the left side. I wanted to make this side with lots of circles, making it look messy and unique. This is shown in my planning in my sketchbook pictured above. To complete this, I used Prismacolor colored pencils from home. I started by lightly creating layers, then repeating the process to make a finished look. It took relatively long, trying to find out the right colors. I wish I did this side in black and white, as shown specifically in my planning. I think the colored version I ended up doing looks HORRIBLE. I really wanted to redo this part, but knowing that I had many other unfinished assignments, re-doing this completely would take a huge toll on myself. To try to make the circles more visible, I went over with black. I think it made it worse. After, I eventually moved on to finish the 'realistic' side. I did not have much time to complete this side, because it was sunday night, at 11 p.m. I first lightly layered marker as a base in the iris to build off of with colored pencil. After, I went over in many layers with the colored pencil. Matching colors and tiny details took very long. After this, I went over with a white gel pen to create highlights.

I encountered several decisions to make for this artwork. For one, I had to decide if I were to use color or to keep it black and white. I wanted to make it unique and eye-catching, so I ended up using color. I regret this decision, and I wish I only used color on the realistic side. Another decision I made was with adding the words. I think it made my artwork look not only MUCH worse, but also took away from what I wanted it to resemble. I tried to add meaning to the work to show the differences of vision but also other hidden meanings. I think that making the one side with circles didn't portray blurryness or difference from the realistic side as much as I hoped. I think this artwork was a guideline for me as an artist to think more about my decisions before making them, and to take into account how these decisions could impact my final artwork negatively. I shouldn't have made it this way. For some reason, to me, I have an odd feeling of embarrassment. I think that creating this taught me a lesson.
