Hand Holding a Rubber Band

"Twisted" (Hand Holding a Rubber Band drawing)

9" x 12"

Graphite pencil on drawing paper

To create this artwork, we were prompted to draw our hand holding a rubber band. It was very easy to choose what to do. I decided to use the prompt and hold the rubber band like so, because it was easy to hold the band. Additionally, I chose this way to hold the rubber band to be drawn because it connected the two fingers.

When producing the artwork, I first arranged my hand in the shown formation holding the rubber band. After that, I started with general shapes and outlines as a beginning sketch. Next, I started making more details for the hand and sleeve. Eventually after making a sketch I liked, I added darker lines and made them thicker to show depth in certain things. I think that a pencil was good for this drawing because we had to start with general shapes and a beginning sketch that we later erased.

There were not many processes that I went through in order to create this piece. At first, I decided what formation to put my hand holding the rubber band in. I chose the certain way shown above in the drawing because it allowed for a more realistic outcome. I think this because you are able to see the whole hand and it adds for a fuller perspective. I decided to do darker and lighter lines to show depth in my drawing, which is needed when you can't shade the drawing to show light/darkness. In the end, I like my drawing although I could have spent an additional hour or so, making it better than the 1-2 hour results. Thinking back, I could have got a better grade if my lines didn't look light/sketchy. I maybe could have increased the thickness or darkness. I made the light lines to show hand creases which have very little depth in real life, because I still needed to show details. Including these creases was a good choice, but I wish that they didn't look like sketchy lines which take away from the final concept/results. Last minute, I added a name to the drawing which was "Twisted". I chose this name because it adds meaning and attention to the rubber band.
