Negative Space Hand

 Negative Space - Practice/Starter Drawing

Negative Space Hand

Graphite Pencil on Drawing Paper

9" x 12"

For this drawing, we were prompted to make a shape with our hand in any way we wanted. I decided to arch my fingers and make it look like a "crawling stance". We were given some class time to complete this, and additional time at home if we desired.

Firstly, I made an outline using my point of observation and then sketching it out with a graphite pencil. I erased bad or unneeded lines, and then solidified my final outline for the hand. After that, I started sketching gradually fading shadows. I used my finger to smudge the graphite.

This project didn't require much or any decisions for planning and completing the drawing.  I decided to put my hand in this position to work on shadows, and also it was an interesting hand pose. We didn't have a lot of time, so the outline does not look complete. My drawing looks very rushed. If I were to redo this project, I would have spent more time with the hand outline and shadow work (basically everything.) I think that it does not look good, or like a finished product at all. I have mixed feelings towards my finished piece. I do think it was important to start our ideas for the subject of negative space, because we were able to visualize the negative space in the hand, and figure out what negative space is about. It was also important because we learned things that you shouldn't do when creating a piece that uses shapes of negative space.
