Thailand
Among the plains, plateaus, and high mountains of Asia lies Moo Deng, a two-month-old rising hippo star who lives in Chon Buri, Thailand. As cute as the pygmy hippopotamus is, Thailand has much more to offer; let's explore that.
Geography:
Thailand is a country located in the middle of southeast asia. It borders Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
Traditions:
Yi Peng Lantern Festival: The Yi Peng Lantern Festival transpires in the northern region of Thailand in the middle of November. Lanterns known as “Khom Loi” are sent up into the air, thousands at a time, with people's wishes written on them. It is believed that while the lantern ascends your worries from the past year leave and it brings good luck for the new year. Following the Thai lunar calendar, November is the second month of the year.
Hae Nang Meaw (rainfall ceremonies): Because Thai society is majorly agrarian, loss of rain hits their economy hard. The Thais believe that rain is a gift from deities, Isan (northeastern) people believe that when rainfall stops it's because the government is not abiding by a proper moralistic code. When this happens they need to pray for rain to come in a ceremony called Hae Nang Meaw, occurring between May and September. It varies from all four regions but the basic idea is the same.
Chak Phra: Around late October Buddhists in southern Thailand celebrate the return of Buddha from heaven and the end of their three-month lent. Chak Phra roughly translates to “pulling the Buddha” and the celebration dates back to when the Buddha was alive, roughly 563 BC.
Places to see:
Bangkok: The bustling capital, Bangkok, is a great place for festivals, hidden temples, and street vendors. Bangkok is always busy with something to see and do, it is impossible to get bored.
Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai is one of the northern cities offering a slower pace of life. In Chiang Mai you can eat at the many restaurants, hike, and view temples dating back to the 13th century.
Lampang: Similar to the other cities in vendors and temples, but with a historical atmosphere, Lampang, just two and a half hours southeast of Chiang Mai is a must-see. Architecture has been preserved from the mid 1800’s to early 1900’s. Visitors can expect to see mansions, Burmese-style temples, and horse-drawn carriages.
