Getting closer to the end of the year comes with an event that all juniors and seniors look forward to. PROM! Did you know that prom is short for “Promenade”? An important day filled with beautiful dresses, fancy suits, corsages, dancing, and friends. Prom creates long lasting memories and unforgettable moments that stick with you forever. But just like students, teachers were once young teenagers getting ready for prom themselves. See what the most memorable part of prom was for some teachers here at River Falls High School.
Mr. V (Villeneuve): “I went to prom my junior year. We had a post-prom party much like the seniors have an end of the year senior party lock-in so the lock-in was pretty sweet. I gambled all night and won an autographed Brett Favre and Reggie White picture. The week leading up to prom we had drawings, I won a free tux rental and my date was in the same geometry class as I was and the next day she won a free gift certificate to dinner so prom got really cheap for me. IT WAS AWESOME! Go into prom thinking you want to have fun with whoever you go with whether it be your date, your friend, your friend group, just go to prom and dance your feet off!
Mr. Haskins: “I went to prom my junior and senior year so I’m a two time prom go-er! I think the most memorable thing about prom was the dance. It was really fun to just be with my friends and have fun in what seemed like a fancy environment. I keep my go-to dance moves pretty basic, you know the shopping cart, the sprinkler, macarena is a good one…ummm the Soulja Boy dance and “Crank that” that’s a good one, I’m good at that one. The most important thing is that everyone has a good time."
Mrs. Serene: “I went to prom my sophomore and junior year, the most memorable part was being able to see your friends all dressed up and not how you see them normally every day. It rained on one of my prom days so we didn’t get to do pictures outside haha! But I think prom is just about embracing the moment and having fun with your friends because it’s not something you can just do anytime you want, you can't recreate it.”
Mr. Bishop: “I went to prom my sophomore, junior, and senior year. We took the ‘little prince and princess’ out to eat with us before prom and we had a fun time. They wanted to go to Mcdonalds and to Mcdonald's playland and we just hung out with them. It was actually a really awesome memory. The most important thing is ....hmmm..that’s a good question, maybe a chance for some kids to just have more formal attire with friends that you don’t get a lot of chances to do that with."
Ms. Pietroske: “I went to prom every year and I was actually on prom court my junior year! My favorite part of prom was…hmm..I really liked to hang out with my friends, like I purposely didn’t go with a date or I would turn them down because I just loved being with my friends. We would do stupid things or like for my junior prom I bought my dog a tux to wear so it was just fun to get dressed up with my friends and we didn’t really take it seriously so I think that was the best part.”
Mrs. Sowa: “I went to prom my junior and senior year. I loved being out on the dance floor with my friends, and I went to a really big high school, so there were just tons of people! It’s a time where you can kind of take in the moment—something that you knew was special—and it definitely ended up being special. I don’t know if I have a go-to dance move; I like to dance to the beat. But USHER… ohhhh my gosh, Usher was like THE BEST. I think prom is about taking away the pressure of what everyone thinks is the expectation. I feel like for big events, everyone thinks it has to be this big, magical thing—and that “if I don’t have the perfect dress” or “if I don’t spend this amount of money,” it can’t be memorable. That is absolutely not the case. You are the person that makes the memories—not the outfit, not the money, not the dinner you go to. So do what’s best for you, your date, your friends... and stay in the moment. Enjoy the moment.”
