Our Task
My group members for this project were Gavin Cook and Rowan Sanctuary. Our task was to figure out the calculations and the physics behind a sport. The sport we chose was soccer, we found the calculation/physics behind a penalty kick. Physics of Sports was our second project this year, which lasted about 10 days. Compared to our first project, Rube Goldberg Machine which was a much longer project.
Work
The work that I contributed to in this project was helping write the script with Gavin, I also did half of the explanations in the video with Rowan. I also contributed to how to kick a penalty. I did calculations with the group member Rowan. The first thing we did was make a storyboard and script, we also worked on our work logs so we could plan what we were going to do ahead of time. That way we could stay on top of our things. We chose to do a penalty kick for our project so we made a storyboard of each step that was going to be talked about throughout the video.
Content
Force of Impact - The Force of impact is the force exerted when two objects collide. The equation for this is mΔv=Ftimpact, which is measured in Newtons.
Ex: The force of the ball getting kicked was 495N ( 111 lbs )
Horizontal Velocity - The Horizontal Velocity is the avg. speed on a flat surface that has no outside forces. This equation is vx=Δx/t and is measured in m/s
Ex: The horizontal velocity of the ball after being kicked was 17.2 m/s
Vertical Velocity - The Vertical Velocity is the velocity of a falling object going up or down. The equation is vy=agtfall, which is measured in m/s
Ex: The vertical velocity of the kick was 6.27 m/s or 14 mph
Total Velocity - The total velocity is the velocity of an object relative to another point when combining two or more relative velocities. The equation of Vtotal is vx^2+vy^2=vtotal, which is measured in m/s.
Ex: The total velocity for our task was 18.3 m/s
Conservation of Momentum - The Conservation of Momentum says that momentum of a system is constant if it has no external forces acting on the system.
Reflection
This was our second project in our STEM Marin projects. This project lasted a short amount of time, about 10 days. In this time we got to know each other in the group, we collaborated well with one another, and we managed to get everything done in this time. For this project we had to choose what sport we wanted and what task we were going to complete. My group members and I decided to do a penalty kick. Two things I did well in this project was working well with my group members, and collaborating. Two things I like to work on is try to involve myself more, and speak more about the ideas I have.
