OUR PROCESS:
Our group tackled the problem of commuting in the Bay Area by first brainstorming the issues and then deciding to focus on extending the SMART train as a solution. We created a wooden model of a two-layered Golden Gate Bridge which we used to showcase how it could be incorporated into our proposed solution. We used this model as a visual aid in our final presentation, which we used to pitch our idea to our class. Overall, our process involved identifying a problem, developing a solution, creating a model to illustrate that solution, and finally presenting our idea to our class.
Ask:
In order for us to identify the need for help in the infrastructure of the Bay Area, an analysis of the current state of the infrastructure was conducted. This included looking at factors such as the condition of the roads, bridges, public transportation systems, and other critical infrastructure. We also took a look at Bidens new bipartisan infrastructure bill which led us to our next step in our engineering design process
Research:
Next, we decided to split the work and take a look at the commuting problems in the Bay Area. My group all found relatively similar responses to this problem. As Commuting in the Bay Area is a significant problem due to a variety of factors. The area's population has been growing rapidly, leading to increased traffic congestion on the roads and highways, and also public transportation options, such as buses and trains, are often overcrowded and unreliable, making it difficult for commuters to rely on them as a consistent and efficient mode of transportation.
Imagine:
There were a variety of possible solutions that could help address the problems with commuting in the Bay Area. One solution could've been incentivizing or requiring employers to offer flexible work schedules or telecommuting options to reduce the number of cars on the road during peak hours. Also, we thought of Building more affordable housing near job centers could also help reduce commute times for many residents. But finally, me and my group decided that the best solution could be investing in and expanding public transportation options, such as buses, trains, and ferries, to make them more reliable and efficient.
Plan:
Expanding the SMART train and adding a new level to the Golden Gate Bridge were both significant projects that would require a comprehensive plan to ensure their success. So, we decided to conduct a study on the feasibility of expanding the SMART train. We did this by looking at maps of the SMART train and finding where our train would be extended to. After we did that, me and my group created a detailed design and construction plan to ensure the success of the expansion
Create:
My group successfully constructed a two-layer model of the Golden Gate Bridge using wood. We began by researching and studying the architecture of the bridge to understand its design and dimensions. We divided our group members into teams and assigned them specific tasks, such as cutting the wood and assembling the pieces. Through collaboration, patience, and attention to detail, we were able to construct a visually striking and accurate representation of a two-layered Golden Gate Bridge using wood.
Test:
My group tested the stability of our Golden Gate Bridge model by running a toy train over it. We set up the model on a flat surface and checked that the train had enough power to run over the bridge. We then ran the train over the bridge several times, observing the model's behavior and taking note of any vibrations or deformations.
Improve:
Our group created a wooden model of the Golden Gate Bridge, however, we encountered an issue during testing when we discovered that the model did not have enough space to fit the toy train through. After we realized this problem, we had to redesign our model to leave the openings bigger allowing our train to fit underneath.
In terms of the 6 Cs, two things I feel like did well during the project was being able to collaborate well and creativity. I was able to effectively work with your group members and contribute to the team's discussions and decision-making. Also incorporating it into your solution demonstrates my ability to think creatively and come up with unique solutions. However, I feel like I lacked critical thinking due to how It would have been more beneficial for me to be more proactive in testing and evaluating the feasibility of my solution. Also, I do think I lacked communication. Even though I participated in creating a final presentation, it would be better for me to have a more in-depth discussion with my group members to ensure that my solution is well understood and that all concerns are addressed.
