For the Outdoor STEM Space project, my group and I were assigned to create a model for a furniture piece for our campus. We needed to create a design that was comfortable, affordable, and suitable for outdoor use, also taking into account the angles of light. The project challenged us to develop an innovative design that fulfilled all the requirements while staying within budget. We saw this as a great opportunity to showcase our design skills and contribute to making our campus more attractive and functional.
First, we had to design our furtniture piece. Me and my group decided to create a hammock due to its usability and design process. We decided to have elevated wood beams wit hooks to elevate the hammock. We also added support beams for more lateral support as well with backpack hooks to hang bags when on the hammock. Our groups blueprint is located below.
Next, our group had to look for the right materials. We purchased almost everything through Home Depot and found the prices on the website. We wanted to find affordable options but also needed options that would be sturdy enough to withstand pressure and weight. So, with that taken into account, for all the wood we decided to go with pressure treated options. This was the most obvious choice for our group due to its long lasting life and its affordability.
Our budget and materials list is attached below.
Reflection:
This project taught me different aspects on how to work with a group to design. First, I feel like my collboration or the "collaborator" in the 6 C's was shown fairly well during this project. I feel like our collaborating as a group was satisfactory for the project. However, as an individual I would like to work on listen to everybodies ideas before going one way. This is important so everybody lists their idea so we pick the best one. Also, one part I need to work on is participating in every aspect of the design besides one specific section of the design process. All in all, the project taught me to collaborate with my teammates fairly well and taught us to ALL collaborate to the design.
