This project was introduced as a crowdsource from Hyundai about alternative energy vehicle. Our job was to create a prototype vehicle that can travel exactly 5 meters. Our vehicle used rubber bands as its energy source, turning the wheels to cause the vehicle to move forward. We also had to create a pitch to Hyundai, explaining the efficiency, logistics and validity of our prototype.
Energy Conversion
There are three present types of energy in this project: Spring Potential Energy, Kinetic Energy and Thermal Energy. Spring Potential Energy is the energy stored in a spring, Kinetic Energy is energy via movement, and Thermal Energy is energy via heat. Our initial PESpring was 7.84J, and our peak Kinetic Energy was 0.797193J. An important thing to note is the total energy is constant no matter what.
Rotational Inertia
Rotational Inertia is the tendency for any rotating object to stay in rotation. In our car, the Rotational Inertia is found within the wheels, where the wheels still continue to spin after all Potential Energy from the rubber bands have been exhausted, until friction and drag overcome it.
This whole project was filled with intellectual debates about what would work for the car and what would not. These little discussions based around physics were a joy to have, and allowed us to expand our critical thinking far greater. In my opinion, these discussions also resulted in a better product.
Personally, I felt I always had ideas to use in the project, and always had the determination to execute my ideas. This determination allowed me to realize my ideas without getting distracted too easily. Additionally, I felt I did put in a lot of effort into the scripting of our presentation.
Although I did put in a decent amount of work into the project, I still wish I took a lead role in organizing and assigning work to everyone. Part of me felt I was in my own world doing my own work, and not collaborating with the group to get the project done.
Overall, I felt I had improved in my cooperation skills and collaboration efforts compared to the beginning of the year. I was able to think more clearly and constructively, and improved with placing myself into the group and their needs.
