The purpose of this assignment is to dissect the anatomy of a frog. This deepens our understanding of the different parts of a frog working to keep it alive, using it as a comparison to our own anatomy.
Tympanum
The tympanum is the external ear drum on the side of a frogs head. The tympanum is responsible for a frog's sense of hearing.
Gullet
The gullet is where a frog's swallowed food enters. This is the entrance to a frogs digestive system.
Glottis
The glottis is the entrance to a frog's respiratory system, where air empties into the lungs. The glottis is aso where the vocal chords are located, used by the frog to croak.
Eustachian tube
The Eustachian tube is a tube that connects the eardrum to the inside of the jaw. The Eustachian tube is used to balance pressure in the inner ear, while the frog is submerged.
Frog Jumping vs human Jumping
When a human jumps, they jump perpendicular to the ground. This is because the force the legs exert is directly perpendicular to the ground, causing the human to move in the same direction. In contrast, the frog jumps at an angle, as it's legs propel at an angle to the ground.
Heart Chambers
The chambers are sectioned off areas located in the heart, working in tandem to pump blood in and out of the body. A frogs heart has three chambers: two atriums and one ventricle.
Bilateral Symmetry
Bilateral Symmetry is the symmetry across a singular line, where one side of the line is a reflection of the other side.
Lungs
The lungs are the main component of the repiratory system, responsible for extractign oxygen from air. A frog's lungs are noticeably underdeveloped compared to a humans, as they can also breathe through their skin.
Cloaca
The cloaca is the opening at the end of a frog. The cloaca is used to expel feces, urine and eggs.
External Reproduction
External Reproduction is the process of developing offspring outside of the animal. External Reproduction is done by frogs in the form of eggs, where the embryo is developed inside the egg.
Sexual Dimorphism
Sexual dimorphism are distinct differences between the two sexes of the same species, which are not directly involved in sexual reproduction. In frogs, both the male and female differ on their forelimbs, where males have nuptial pads.
Organ Systems
Organ Systems are groups of organs that work together to complete a general task. In a frog, there are 8 main systems: the digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, skeletal system, muscular system, reproductive system, excetory system and nervous system.
Digestive System
The Digestive System is the system responsible for breaking down and extracting nutrients from food consumed. In a frog, the digestive system is consisted of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and cloaca.
Circulatory System
The Circulatory System is responsible for circulating blood across the entire body, which delivers oxygen and other nutrients to places that need it. In a frog, the circulatory system is consisted of the heart and blood vessels (veins, arteries and capillaries).
Respiratory System
The Respiratory System is the system responsible for taking air in, and extracting oxygen from it, while expelling. any other waste products in the air. In a frog, the respiratory system is consisted of the mouth (including the surface), lungs and skin.
Excretory system
The Excretory System is the system responsible for getting waste out of the body. In a frog, the excretory system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and cloaca.
Skeletal System
The skeletal system is the system responsible for maintaining the structure of the body. In a frog, the skeletal system are all the bones in it (important ones include the skull and spinal cord).
Nervous System
The Nervous system is the system responsible for sending signals and information to tell the body what to do, done via electrical pulses. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and other nerves around the body.
Muscular System
The muscular system is the system responsible for movement of the body and it's joints. In a frog, the muscular consists of muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Reproductive System
The reproductive system is the system responsible for the sexual reproduction in organisms. In a frog, the reproductive system consists of testes, vasa efferentia, urinogenital ducts and the cloaca in males, and a pair of ovaries and oviducts in females.
During this project, I felt very productive and in control of my productivity and efficiency. Our team was always the farthest ahead, and both of us worked off of each other well, dividing and conquering to get work done. I have learnt that I work very well with a partner, as we can both keep each other in check to stay on task, as well as splitting part work to get it done faster.
Although this assignment seemed to be the best I have performed for any project, there are still some areas I could have improved in. For one, I could have taken more of a part in dissecting, as opposed to only doing written work. This would let me get a fuller experience for the project, deeping my understanding in the subject at hand. In addition, my work was often sloppy due to how fast we were going. In the future, I will be sure to be as throrough and methodical as possible, so as to output my best work.
