In this project, we were assigned to create alternative ideas, in order to further flesh out our current Capstone Project. First, we were to decompose the elements of our prototype, and arrange them into what is a functional decomposition. This allowed us to develop alternative ideas for specific sub-functions within the design. Then, we compiled those into a classification scheme, which allowed us to develop certain pathways and arrangements for all the little alternative ideas, in order to vastly improve our original prototype.

Classification scheme
A Classification scheme is a model used to design different combinations of partial designs, compiled together to choose better models than the original prototype. In our project, we used classification schemes to make multiple diffrent alternative designs to our original prototype.
Functional Decomposition
Functional decomposition is the process of breaking apart the mechanics of a product into multiple sub functions, allowing you to have solutions that target very specific aspects of the prototype. We used functional decomposition as a preliminary step for our classification scheme.
Pulse Width Modulation
Pulse Width Modulation is a way to make digital output function as analog outputs. It is done by quickly oscillating the digital output on and off, to make it look some percentage in dimness. We will use this as our primary mechanism in fading in and out the electromagnets in our prototype.
Onshape
Onshape is a 3d modeling surface used to create models for 3d printers. It is the primary software we use for designing our prototype.
I2C
I2C is a communication protocol which allows to connect multiple slave devices onto a single master. It was one of the potential solutions we considered in our Classification Scheme.
Serial Peripheral Interface
SPI is a protocol designed for short distance communication between multiple outputs. It is also another option we considered for our prototype when it came to the circuit architecture.
The overall project went quite well all things considered, as we were able to complete a well-crafted project. However some things we could have improved on. For one, we initially had trouble figuring out what exactly is needed in the requirements for the Classification Scheme. In the future, we will be more sure to thoroughly read the directions/rubric in order to get every single piece of information required. In addition, we struggled with was turning in the assignment on time. In the future, we will be more diligent in completing things on times.
Of the things that well went, one of them was the amount of research we did. We put in a lot of hours figuring out what options would exactly work best, especially for the circuit architecture. In addition, we were able to successfully implement our mentors feedback into the classification scheme, including the hexagonal tessellation and I2C protocol.
