What beliefs do I hold about education and learning?
Education and learning are opportunities to explore and dig deeper into hidden knowledge. This allows us to better understand the world around us and aids us in sharing that knowledge with others. Education is a passport to our future that enables us to transform ourselves through how we think, act, and interact with others. As a future educator, I want my students to feel comfortable to share their experiences and be safe in my classroom. Each of us possesses different perspectives and ideas regarding many different topics. While it can be difficult to agree or conform to another individual’s thoughts, I value understanding and being open to different opinions and thoughts. This would mean that in my future classroom, I would make sure to create some ground rules before the school year begins to ensure that my students understand my expectations on how to behave and function in the classroom to provide a safe and healthy environment for all students. Not only will the classroom be a space for everyone to educate themselves through academics, but the usage and practice of interpersonal skills through social-emotional learning will also be utilized to allow students to get ready for the modern, adult world.

How do these beliefs shape my teaching?
These beliefs shape my teaching, as it would reflect my philosophy of education. When the school year begins, I would have my students create a series of norms that everyone in the classroom follows. This would ensure that students are understanding of what is expected in class. Students being aware of the rules being set helps them to behave better knowing that there is a consequence to their actions and allows everyone in the classroom to feel safe and comfortable to freely express their thoughts, ideas, or points of view. In addition, interpersonal skills being placed into practice in classrooms are an important method of teaching that will shape my teaching. I will make sure to use effective social-emotional learning strategies in my classroom to create an inclusive learning environment that supports and nurtures the interests and assets of all individuals. This will be done by teaching students about the importance of being self-aware, and socially aware, learning to manage themselves, creating relationship skills, and being responsible decision-makers.
