Some values that I hold are equity and inclusion. It is important that everyone is included and supported. Equity is crucial as it ensures that every individual has an equal opportunity or chance for success. Identifying the barriers or challenges faced by the individual and providing them additional support to overcome those barriers can allow students to reach their full potential both academically and socially. Having students know that they are supported allows them to learn and explore with no worries. It leads them to safely express their ideas, views, and perspectives and be respected as individuals. With inclusive teaching, everyone can embrace and accept our differences and diversity. Teaching a classroom with diversity and inclusion is key as differences are what makes us unique. That is why diversity and inclusion lead to a more positive space for teaching and learning. As an educator, not only will I be able to learn from others’ abilities, but so will my students.
These values shape my teaching because education is a right, not a privilege. Each student deserves education and as educators, we should strive to make it possible for them. Not all students live the same lives so utilizing equity ensures that each individual placed in a different circumstance can be given extra resources and opportunities to reach an equal outcome for all students. This empowers all students to succeed. Differences shouldn’t hold back individuals from achieving their educational goals. Equity and inclusion should be utilized in classrooms as every student deserves to learn, be respected, and be accepted for their differences. To uphold these values in my classroom, I will attempt to create a safe and welcoming environment for all my students. This includes getting to know my students, building trust, maintaining a consistent source of communication, respecting and acknowledging all students, as well as incorporating diversity in my lesson plans. While these are only some ways I can promote inclusion and equity in the classroom, I hope to create a classroom where everyone’s voices are heard and respected.
