Today, Dr. Salahuddin from the engineering aerospace department will share with all engineering students about his theme of ethics and academic integrity. All types of students can benefit from this topic's generality. Most students would associate academic integrity with plagiarism and cheating, but this session will broaden their perspective on academic integrity.
The presenter, Dr. Salahuddin, began his speech by asking us to respond to a seemingly random question about the causes of student cheating. Most of them would cheat in order to avoid failing the test and receiving a low grade. Then, the session proceed with the branch in academic integrity issue
The issue of academic integrity involves more than just cheating and plagiarism which it also involves contract cheating. The student pays a particular person or group of people to serve them by completing assignments or tasks that will be used to grade their performance. Despite this, contract cheating results in a student being rated untruthfully. The coursework grade is therefore similarly irrelevant to the student's performance. Next, the speaker reminds the students about the tools and online websites designed to assist them, such as Chegg, Quillbot, and others. These tools allow students to receive answers for assignments and paraphrase other people's ideas and statement to use as their own.
After that, the presenter also advised regarding the online website that assist the student in finding solution. Most of the website will charge the student to subscribe to their website. As a result, they have the student profile. Students typically stop using or subscribing to websites after a few years when they no longer require them. Some websites would approach students and threaten them with blackmail since they don't want them to stop subscribing. Some of them will exposed the data and information about student dishonesty to the prior university that students studied. Therefore, even though they are no longer utilising the website, the students are forced to keep their subscription since they have no other option. The students will be subject to action for academic integrity issues. More tragic, the student's certificate and achievement may be suspended by the university.
Then, the presenter also talked about self-plagiarism which is the person using his content from the past few years to be sent as a nowadays assignment. However, this concept needs to have a lot of opinions as some students are asking if the student using the same content but improving it before submitting it. This question got different opinions as there was dependable on the situation and improvements that have been made by the student. After all, the situation that being asked, it will not be assume self-plagiarism because the student does not use the same content from the past few years.
After all the information was shared, the speaker urged the audience member to refrain from using plagiarism in assignments and exams because doing so would be against academic ethics. In the career period, they will be no employer who will take someone who doesn’t have the integrity to work under them because trust issues are very important among the workers. Last but not least, the speaker also reminds that the habits we develop now will shape the people we become tomorrow. The things that I learned were, as a student and a human we should have integrity and moral because by developing it ourselves would make us a better person for the society even more to the country.
