Lesson 1 : Crating and sketching shapes with blue led mechanical pencil
The 2D Basic Shapes & Rendering sheet combines 2D shapes, using centre lines for symmetry, with marker pen applied to convey shadows and 3D form. To see the shapes in 3D, scan in the QR code or see the 3D example below.
For our first lesson we were all introduced to shapes and a technique of drawing them called crating, Crating is when you draw ghost lines to help you create more symmetrical and even shapes . I feel like I found this task quite easy because I have done this for many years now, but still some of the shapes weren't perfect and I still need a lot of practice. The crating helped me tremendously because without crating, all the shapes I drew would've been uneven and basically a disaster, crating made my life easier.
These were the three shapes I think I did best in, I havent had time to fine line any of them yet but so far I am incredibly happy with how they turned out using a blue led mechanical pencil.
The first shape is a circle and I drew that with what's called the "ghosting" technique. It's when you keep koving your wrists in a circular motion then when you have an idea of how the circle will look like you slowly tilt your pencil downwards to create a circle. After you have a light line of the circle you then trace it again while pressing harder on to the paper to make a clearer shape.
The second shape im not quite sure what it is but it's this sort of rectangular shape with no sharp edges just circular edges, For this shape I did a whole lot of crating and drew lots of lines. This shape requires multiple lines because it has a second shape inside the shape itself and I want that to look perfectly symmetrical. Overall Im very happy of how it turned out thanks to all the crating.
Again Im not sure what the third shape is called but it has an extended shape coming from the main shape, with the last one I also did crating and I kinda estimated where each line was going to go due to the fact that this shape wasn't a well know shape that everyone knows how to draw. I just use my crate lines and my brain to estimate where each line was gonna go. I am super happy with how it turned out mainly because I never drew this shape before and this was my first go and it looked pretty good.
My favorite shape out of these three has got to be the second one because of how the crate lines were looking and how the overall shape was pretty symmetrical.
After the finelining it was time for rendering, First I started with the black pencil to shade in the lines but I have to make sure to not make the line too stiff so it looks unrealistic. After that depending on the shape I start to render closer to the middle to fill it in. Personally for me I think the hardest shape to render was the circle because the shape is very circular and everything was just quite confusing to me since there are no angles or anything. The easiest shape to render was the rectangle since it was just one solid shape with no round edges and it was really clear where the sunlight would hit the shape. ( for this practice paper I have decided to put the sun on the top left corner of the page so the sunlight would hit the left side of all shapes)
By the first lesson I have completed five shapes, and I enjoyed doing all of them because they were easy shapes. By keeping in mind that the sun will hit the left side of the shape it was very obvious on where to make it darker or lighter. So shading was not complicated at all since I knew where the shadows and the highlights are going to be.
The second lesson I finished everything but since I took the paper home to do for prep, I had to use my own materials. I had a different black pencil then the one in the DT department so that kinda ruined my shading a bit since my black pencil wasn't quite good. It made the shadows way too dark and my circles look severely unrealistic so Im quite unhappy about that.
This is the reference image I look at while drawing these shapes. I don't copy them completely I just try my best to get the idea of what each shape is supposed to look like. My work definetaly has a lot more crating lines then this reference image. This reference image is basically used to help me figure out where the source of light is and where it shines onto the shape. In this case the light source/sunlight is the top left corner for every shape.
These are fineliners, I use them to give definition to my shape and the fineliners help them pop. I use about 3 tips 0.5, 0.3 and 0.8 . 0.5 is used for outlining the basic shape, 0.3 is used for the crating lines and 0.8 is for definition it's used to outline the whole outside of the shape.
These are all th pencils I've used, The mechanical one is for the blue led and it's used for drawing, crating ghostlines. The black pencil is used for the shadown and the depth of the shape to make it more 3D and realistic. The white pencil is the opposite of the black it's used for the highlights and to add light to the shape.
These are the two markers I used, you really can use any colour you like it just has to be the same letter before each marker so it wil be the same tone. I chose cool tones which were grey. I used W4 and W5. The markers are used for adding colour to the shape on appropriate spots so again it looks 3d and more realistic.
