My father is a musician, so I have always had music in my life. I learnt to play the drums when I was 11, passing my grade 1 with merit. I also learnt the piano, and neither really resonated with me until the end of 2019. This is when one of my oldest friends asked me to play drums in his new band, The Distraction. I agreed and had one of the most exciting years of my life.
Alongside my GCSEs I grew a strong bond with the three other band members as we learnt new songs and held small gigs for our friends and family. We progressed from an audience of family members to performing at many school events and a few open mic nights. During this time five songs were written and lots of memories were made. My move to Bali cut our time short and they have since found a new drummer, but they're all great friends still and we have some wonderful memories, and most importantly the experience showed me how much I love collaborating creatively and logistically.
About a year later for my Jalan Jalan (project based class) at Green School, I interned at my fathers studio and wrote and record my own pieces of music. Following this, I was inspired to film an accompanying video, called "Vibey Girl"
Have a watch!
When playing the drums I was always trying to play weird outside the box beats.
The multitasking of drumming creates divergent thinking.
I was curious when my dad was helping me mix vibey girl to see how it all works and comes together.
Playing gigs with my band and performing at school was nerve racking but so worth it.
I feel like I helped others reach their goals during the vibey girl shoot as everyone who had a role was doing it for free.
I took initiative to get stuff done when people or myself was slacking
Everything I have done music related has been as part of a team.
The end goal of gigs or my music video was always shared by others so we would join together to reach the final destination.
Everyone would always get a say in group decisions.
