DofE was one of my greatest adventures and commitments. I completed my bronze and silver level and what a journey it was! Over 9 hikes, we trekked over 30km. I did 9 months of volunteering, and 9 months of developing a new skill, plus 6 months of physical activity.
For my Bronze volunteering, I assisted a non profit making organisation with a kids hip-hop dance class.
For the Skills section, I cooked a new dish every week, which I delivered to a professional chef to critiquing my meals.
For the physical component of both Bronze and Silver, I played football and trampolined weekly. The whole journey was so rewarding, committing to tasks with deadlines and reaching expectations. Growing as a person both physically and mentally. It taught me always to give stuff a go, because you never know how much you will enjoy it or how good you may be at it.
For my Silver volunteering award, I assisted at a weekly Alpha trampolining club. They had 20+ students of a high standard that needed physical support and encouragement as their moves were in some cases very complicated.
For Silver Skills section, I attended a pottery course every week for over a year and learned many new art skills. I learned how to throw on a wheel, work with different clay types and create everything from raku to slip work.
Along with all the richness I gained within I also gained life long friends from the expedition. Spending intense days continuously with nothing but nature and each other to rely on was very bonding and rewarding. The ups and downs shared and developing many new skills previously untried was truly a gift.
I found many creative mediums that I had never explored before. Like ceramics and cooking.
Also when planning what I was going to do for each of the sections I really had to think outside the box as I wanted to do eclectic and fresh subjects.
Being part of team when playing sport or when working as a coach helped me develop my collaboration socially and professionally.
I interacted and partnered with many people whom I would never had met if I hadn't done this awards enterprise. I know that participating in the DOE program has contributed towards shaping me into the young man I am today
I had to think much more for myself when volunteering as I was essentially a worker/employee having to fix anything that went wrong.
Also dealing with different personality types made me adapt and figure out how to deal with a variety of people and situations.
