It will take a while before your car arrives (if you shipped one). Some people got AAA international driving licenses before leaving the US and then were able to rent a car here in Korea. Others rely on taxis to get around (which cost between $5-10 a ride, depending on where you are going). It is also possible to get around Daegu using public transportation (subway, monorail, bus) or bike. All public transportation options are labeled in English as well as Korean.
Base Cab(1544-9080) information to know – there is a base cab that can take you from place to place from base and ON base. This is important to know because the cabs “on the economy” do not have base access. Base taxi services not only can take you on base, but they will come to where you are when you call them and the dispatchers have a better grasp of English. Some ideas that may help – having a smart phone allows you to take photographs, use google maps or in other ways “show” a driver where you want to go. This is less necessary with on base cabs, but more necessary off base.
There are three subway lines in Daegu. Below is the subway map.
You can use a prepay T-Money card for subways, busses, taxis and toll roads. The cards can be purchased at local GS25, Mini Stop, CU or other convenience store. You can recharge the cards at any convenience store or at kiosks at the subway stations.
Public transportation is inexpensive in Korea, so don't be afraid to use it. Always be sure to carry your address in English or Korean. You can show this to a taxi driver and he can put it into the GPS and take you to your destination.
