Our school services students from Sure Start to 5th grade. The elementary program, Kindergarten through grade five, operates in self-contained classrooms with specialists available in music, art, Korean culture, computer education, physical education and a foreign language (Spanish). Daegu Elementary School is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges, the largest school accrediting agency in the United States. Specialists in Learning Disabilities, Speech Therapy, English as a Second Language, and Reading are available to students who require additional services.
History and other interesting facts of Daegu Elementary School
Daegu Elementary School was established at Camp Walker in 1959(The first DoDDS school in Korea) as an elementary school with only eight students. Significant changes occurred between 1959 and 1975 as DES grew to a K-9 school. Students in grades 10-12 were transported by train and boarded weekly in Pusan. By 1975, the school had transformed to a K-6/7-12 complex with two principals.
In SY 1982-83, the two schools were placed under one principal and one assistant principal in preparation for the anticipated opening of a new facility under construction during this time at Camp George. Under one roof, a K-12 “unit school” concept began in SY 1983-84. The Sure Start Program based on the tenets of Head Start was instituted at Daegu American School in September of 1995. Eighteen 3 and 4 year old children are currently enrolled in the program.
In SY 2011-2012, the high school(Grades 9-12) have separated DES and moved to Camp Walker.
In SY 2017-2018, the middle school(Grades 6-8) have separated DES and joined the newly built 21st century High School in Camp Walker.
“Dragons are Readers. Dragons are Leaders” is the motto that guides Daegu Elementary School. The student body of approximately 350 is composed primarily of dependents of active duty U.S. military and civilian employees. There is a great multi-ethnic diversity represented within our student body.
