The website evaluation assignment allowed us to give feedback to our web staffers on how we could improve the website for our readers. It was difficult to try to perceive the website with fresh eyes, but it was necessary to look for ways to improve its quality. Part of the assignment required looking at other publication sites, which gave new ideas on how to make our website more interesting and eye-catching. As a copy staffer, I used my editing skills to find simple errors and upgrades that, once fixed, could make the publication look cleaner and more professional.
After a web training, the staff received access to the back end of the website. As a managing editor, I now have administration abilities. I have been assisting with web instruction for staffers along with formatting and uploading my own stories. Introducing this training has allowed for me to help staffers with a new skill and understand the behind-the-scenes processes.
I like to lead The Muse by example, so while we encourage incorporating interactive elements to web content, I added quizzes to my own stories too. For my horoscope satire, students found their "true zodiac signs" and even posted their results on social media. Learning how the website functions has allowed me to augment my own work and suggest for staffers to utilize these tools in their content as well.
I edit social media captions before they are uploaded to The Muse's Instagram. I love highlighting the work that I helped improve and spreading important news to the student body on a platform they are familiar with.
