Along with editing posts before they are uploaded to The Muse's Instagram, I repost them on my personal social media platforms. I enjoy spreading important, factual information across the internet to the student body for them to remain updated and educated. It is important for me to uplift my fellow staffers and their work and contribute to the expansion of their hard work across platforms. I love highlighting their live coverage, showing how quickly the teams can work together to inform students of breaking news.
Exams are a significant part of high school, so the student body pays attention to information about them. The school changed the exam schedule procedures to morning time, so this was fresh information that applied to the entire school. I took the initiative of crafting a graphic and caption to post on our Instagram as soon as we were aware of the news. It was important for our publication to break the news first to emphasize our presence as a news provider on campus. I love working on a staff that students look to for information.
As Production Managing Editor, I edit second drafts of social media posts. I leave comments explaining certain edits to clarify the “why” behind making suggestions. When talking to staffers, I encourage asking questions about my feedback for a full understanding and helping with their curiosity. Since social content should be concise and drive users to our other content, it is imperative to emphasize brevity and cut captions. I use my copy editor background when editing social media content to help with rephrasing, fact-checking, and other necessary processes to refine our content’s quality.
Providing my suggestions on how we can make our publication's website better was an interesting assignment. Comparing our website to that of other publications supplied new ideas on how to refine it.
