After earning my Photoshop certification, I started focusing on Indesign. It is especially important now because as Production Managing Editor, I apply proofing edits in the last stages before we publish every issue, and having this role has allowed me to to carry my detail-oriented mindset from writing to our visual elements as well. BrainBuffet training allowed me to tackle different types of projects, so I can use those skills while editing our magazine. I used to be afraid to even hover over the Indesign icon, but now I have built confidence in editing spreads.
The page above is Issue 1's table of contents before (left) and after (right) I edited. There were comments about photos fighting for dominance and labeling the editorial. I made the cover story's graphic as the dominant visual element out of the four photos and switched out an element from our digital SAT story to a more visually captivating photo from our cultural recipes story. I also reordered the photos so they were in the same order as the magazine. I was afraid to edit content because I lacked confidence, but adjusting them is exactly what built my skill.
