In addition to covering the major areas of Number and Algebra, Shape, Space and Measure and Data Handling the IGCSE course at Key Stage 4 covers additional topics in Differentiation, Functions and Sets. It provides a sound basis for Mathematics at IB level.
There are two tiers of entry:
Higher Tier covering grades 9 - 4
Foundation Tier covering grades 5 - 1.
There are currently five sets in Year 10 with students being placed according to their individual needs. The IGCSE course has already been started in Year 9.
Our aim is to help students achieve their full potential in the subject. Furthermore, we hope that by working co-operatively, independently, practically and through investigation students will
acquire a firm foundation for further study and develop a positive attitude towards the subject.
learn to think and communicate mathematically - with precision, logic and creativity.
develop an appreciation of the place and use of mathematics in society and apply the concepts to situations arising in their own lives.
finally, enjoy doing mathematics!
To help reinforce these ideas we encourage students to participate in the Maths Challenges organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust and the Canguru competition run by Coimbra University.
Two calculator papers each two hours long.
For further information please contact the Mathematics Department.
Calculators
Scientific calculators are mandatory for the IGCSE course, but we strongly recommend that students acquire and familiarise themselves with a graphical calculator as such equipment is now obligatory for all IB Mathematics courses and hence the sooner students master them the better.
The calculators we currently insist upon in the IB are the
TEXAS TI-84 Plus,
TEXAS TI-84 Plus Silver Edition,
TEXAS TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition
TEXAS TI‑84 Plus CE-T2 calculators.
(but NOT the Texas Instruments TI-Nspire with TI-84 Plus Keypad, nor any TI-83 models)
