Art & Design – challenging coursework. Time-consuming; needs talent and motivation. Essential for Visual Arts at IB.
Business Studies – applying skills of numeracy, critical thinking and enquiry in the business sector. Economics in IB?
Computer Science - Provides an ideal foundation in computer science. Learners gain confidence in computational thinking and programming, an appreciation of automated and emerging technologies and the benefits of their use. (Cannot be chosen with ICT) .
Drama – good complement for those considering English, Modern Languages; even Law! Develops presentation skills & self-confidence
DT – useful for engineering, architecture, dentistry / vet
Geography – future study of social or environmental sciences. Environmental Systems in IB?
History – very useful for future lawyers, economists, journalists; social science HE courses.
ICT – Analytical view of new technologies & IT applications in various job sectors. (Cannot be chosen with Computer Science) .
PE – helpful with Biology. Future sports sciences / physiotherapy?
Portuguese, French or German – good general choice – especially for those following humanities /soc. science/ business, or planning international careers
Music – don’t have to be planning a musical career!
N.B. Some higher education courses have prerequisites at IB level. Thought should be given to (I)GCSE focus in preparation for these.
Medicine / Veterinary science – Sciences important. Chemistry /Biology HL at IB
Dentistry – DT at (I)GCSE helpful. Chemistry / Biology HL at IB
Engineering – Maths / Physics HL at IB- DT helpful at (I)GCSE
Computer Science– Physics component of science important. Minimum Maths SL at IB. HL science sometimes required.
Law – Social science at (I)GCSE. History or Economics HL at IB suggested
Architecture – Art & Design or DT at (I)GCSE. Physics component of science important.
