English as a Second Language is offered as an alternative for students who have been educated in English for a relatively short period. The syllabus develops the ability to use English effectively in a variety of contexts and equips the students with broader skills. These include selecting and analysing material, summarising and note taking, narrative, descriptive, personal and review writing, presenting arguments, giving advice and opinions.
Students who succeed in IGCSE ESL can study selected IB English courses at Higher or Standard level. The certificate is widely recognised by universities at which courses are studied in English.
The objectives of the English as a Second Language syllabus are to:
Develop the ability to use English effectively for the purpose of practical communication in a variety of social registers and styles;
Form a sound base for the skills for further study or employment using English as the medium;
Develop an awareness of the nature of language and language-learning skills, along with skills of a more general application;
Promote students’ personal development and a wider international perspective.
IGCSE English as a Second Language offers students the opportunity to develop practical communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Learners will be presented with a variety of stimuli that will build up their skills in reading and writing. They will learn to select relevant details, understand the difference between what is directly stated and implied, and practise writing for different purposes and audiences. Learners will listen to a range of spoken material, including talks and conversations, in order to develop listening skills. Learners will engage in conversations on a variety of topics, and develop their skills in responding to different situations and audiences with a degree of accuracy and clarity.
Skills will be taught through a wide range of topics such as 'Travel and Tourism', 'Science and Nature' and 'Media and Films'.
Each student sits two papers (at either Core or Extended level) and does an oral exam.
Core level: Grades C to G awarded
Paper 1: Reading and Writing (1 h 30 min) – 60% of total marks
Paper 3: Listening (approx. 40 mins) – 20% of total marks
Extended level: Grades A* to E awarded
Paper 2: Reading and Writing (2 hours) - 60% of total marks
Paper 4: Listening (approx. 50 mins) - 20% of total marks
Core and extended levels:
Component 5: Speaking (10 -12 mins approx) - 20% of total marks
The combination of knowledge and skills in Cambridge IGCSE in English as a Second Language gives learners a solid foundation for further study.
