Enduring with Christ

We prepared for the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C) this week. As we hurtle towards the end of the Church's year, Jesus warns his disciples that there will be uncomfortable challenges ahead. The Christian life will not be an easy one! However, he encourages them, "Your endurance will win!"

We have been exploring with the children this week the challenges and difficulties they face in their worlds. We have been encouraging them to find positive ways to endure these difficulties by holding firm to their faith in Christ.

Pupil Vs Parent

Year 4 have enjoyed consolidating their understanding of place value and multiplication this week through an array of games. They particularly enjoyed having their parents join in the fun on Wednesday morning when they played various Loop the Card games and tried to get rid of their cards as quickly as possible. Many children were keen to beat the parents! Thank you parents for joining! Consolidating our understanding of multiplication will help us have a greater understanding of division which we will be looking at next week.

Local Area Study

To link in with our Geography learning on maps, Year 1 have been learning about our local area. We looked it up on Google Earth, finding our school, the church, the allotment and the Co-op. On Wednesday, we went on a walk to look at these different places in our local area. Following this, we will be using maps to plot our route and learning about symbols for the church and school to add to our maps.

Reach for the stars!

Mysteriously, some stars appeared on the ceiling of each classroom and the children had to think of inventive ways to catch the star! They loved being creative with the junk modelling and making rockets, baskets, nets and many other inventions to catch the stars. However, this was not an easy job. All the children's perseverance with making their creations linked fantastically to our Gospel theme this week as the children had to endure many challenges... Sticky tape not sticking, the glue being too sticky, the stars not falling off the ceiling! But it was worth it, look at the joy in all the children's faces! Well done Reception.

Wise Owls

Our English lessons in Year 3 are focusing on the well-known story ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’, so on Thursday the children enjoyed a fascinating talk from Angela and Nio about different owls. They showed us three different owls: Bamu - an African Spotted Eagle Owl, Rolo- a Barn Owl and Quinn - a Southern White Faced Owl and gave us many facts about their diet, habitat, appearance and behaviour. The children asked interesting questions and listened to the answers. One owl was a little nervous and kept trying to spread his wings! Here are some of the facts we learned:

The Barn Owl’s tummy and chest colour help it to blend into the clouds so mice can’t see it.
They spread oil around their feathers to keep them clean and make them waterproof.
Barn owls are nocturnal, can turn their heads 270 degrees, and are native to the UK. They hunt using their hearing. Nocturnal owls have brown eyes.
African spotted Eagle Owls are daytime owls. They have yellow eyes. Their claws are double jointed allowing them to adjust their grip according to their prey.

Discovery through drama

Year 2 have come to the end of their Baptism topic this week. We finished off with some drama where the children acted out the story of the Baptism of Jesus. This allowed us the opportunity to think about why Jesus was baptised in the River Jordan and how some of the people would have felt who witnessed this. We also delved in to why John would have felt that he was not worthy to baptise Jesus. These skills enable the children to describe events from the Bible in further detail, building on their retelling skills that they have learned in Year 1.

Bienvenue Mon Amis

This term in Year 6 we are learning French vocabulary and phrases associated with free time; particularly hobbies and sports. In our first lesson, we were able to give preferences of different sports and learnt the vocabulary for a huge range of activities. We used dictionaries to help with any tricky words we couldn't translate. We also listened to a song with the days of the week, which we learnt in Year 5 and what activities they did each day. We used our translations to help us decode the song. It also meant we were all singing 'Toi tu fait quoi?' around the school...

We Remember

This week in Nursery we have been looking at Remembrance Day and what it signifies. The children have all made poppies from various materials. They enjoyed using the clay and manipulated it using their hands so that it resembled a poppy. Another favourite was using peppers to print poppy shapes onto paper.

Celebrating Maths!

It's been a fantastic week to focus on making maths active and bringing some energy to our lessons. Here are some snaps of Years 5 and 6 engaging in challenging number problems with the help of teamwork and resources.

Remembering 5L

Our sincerest thanks to St Leonard's Class for a truly moving worship on the theme of Remembrance Day. The children shared, with such maturity and clarity, the tradition of November (a month to remember the dearly departed). They shared with us the tragedy of war and the brave and selfless contributions of men and women for generations who have fought to keep us safe. We celebrated their lives and lay a wreath to mark their sacrifice.

Enduring Spirit

Congratulations to Arpan and Caitlin, both of whom have shown an incredible commitment to endurance this week, living up to the school's high expectations of behaviour and contribution. God bless you both.
