C - 28th Ordinary

An Attitude of Gratitude

Our worship theme this week is gratitude, as we look ahead to the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C). In this weekend's Gospel, we hear how Jesus is implored by ten lepers to heal them - he does - but only one of the ten returns to say, "Thank you".

We have explored with the children this week the importance of looking at the world through a lens of gratitude. The more we can see the small blessings that make our life wholesome, the better we will feel about our place within it. The act of saying, "Thank you" is an important one to practise regularly.

In turn, staff have been asked to make a special effort to thank the children for living up to our expectations: smart uniform, regular reading, focused attention and careful presentation.

National Poetry Day 2022

Children throughout the whole school were enthusiastic to take part in this year's Poetry Day! With a nationwide theme of 'The Environment', it was wonderful to see each year group exploring this in different ways. From taking children outside to write, to learning poems about whales, each year group had a unique way to express themselves through poetry. Check out some of the projects here! We have also started a new 'poetree' in the junior library. Some of your teachers have added their favourite poem to this, perhaps you may like to also?

Making sense of Year 1

In Science, Year 1 have been exploring our senses. This week, we became sense investigators and used our senses to see, hear, smell, feel and taste different things. The taste test was definitely our favourite, although there were mixed reviews about the taste of olives!

Year 2 Programmers

In Year 2 the children having been using floor robots (Beebots) as they learn about algorithms. Last week they made predictions about how the Beebots will move when they follow a particular algorithm and this week the children have checked their predictions were correct. The children then created their own floor mats and algorithms, challenging themselves to move around the cones.

This month’s focus is all around Mental Health Day which is celebrated on Monday 10th October 2022

The ‘Right of the Month’ is:

Article 24 - You have the right to the best possible health

During this month we celebrate Mental Health Day and the idea that all of our feelings are important. Mental health is just as important as physical health but sometimes harder to understand as we cannot necessarily see when someone is hurting.

Why not create a picture or model of a brain and record the things that make you feel happy and safe?

The ‘Wellness Warrior Challenge’ is:

To take notice of your surroundings to help boost your mood. The changing season and light can affect everyone’s mood. Why don’t you take a walk after school or at the weekend with your family? Can you notice all the wonderful changes autumn brings? You could write a list of all the things you're thankful for.

Back in time...

To enhance our history topic of ‘The Stone Age’, Year 3 visited Butser Ancient Farm on Wednesday 5th October. We had a very interesting day experiencing life as Stone Age children and taking part in fascinating activities. The children loved being archaeologists; digging in the soil and identifying what they had found. Crushing chalk was also a popular activity. The fine powder was then mixed with soil and water to make ‘clunch’. Children were able to use the ‘clunch’ to help build a wall. Everyone was very creative when using flint and to carve on chalk and mould their own clay/mud pots.

Patterns Everywhere

Reception have been loving patterns in Maths and took their learning outside. Now the leaves are falling, the children collected then from the floor and used lots of sticky glue to make some natural patterns. The leaves promoted lots of good language too - spotting different colours, textures and sizes.

Reception have a task for you! Can you find leaves on your way home and make your own patterns? What’s the most complicated pattern you can make?

Words & Birds

Year 4 enjoyed exploring poetry today in celebration of National Poetry Day. They studied The Word Bird by Sally Crabtree - all about how the world was created. Their favourite part was making their own bird to write their poem in!

The Classics

Year 5 have been studying 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes. This week we have been doing an in depth look at the characters' personalities and motivations to explain how they acted. Children were challenged to use quotes from the text to support their answers.

Mathematicians at work!

In Maths, Year 6 have started a new unit focussed on the relationship between numbers. We have explored the four operations and moved swiftly onto factors, multiples, prime numbers and composite numbers. To develop a deeper understanding, we encouraged the children to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. As part of a lesson on factors, we created flow diagrams to decide if certain numbers were factors or not. We discussed a conjecture from a Greek Mathematician - Goldbach and used calculations to prove it. We also tested out a theory to find all prime numbers under 100. The children are certainly rising to the challenge and we had a healthy debate about why 1 is in fact not a prime number because it only has one factor and that 0 has an infinite number of factors and therefore we could not consider this a prime number either! Well done Year 6 - keep up this impressive mathematical thinking.

Harvest Blessings

Led by the school choir, we enjoyed a celebration of thanksgiving today in recognition of Harvest Fast Day. Thank you to all families who so generously contributed from their pantries in order to support local residents and the North Guildford Food Bank. Year 6 delivered the harvest goods after our liturgy this morning and we gratefully received by our school neighbours.
