C - 30th Ordinary

The Humility of Christ

We looked ahead this week to the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C) and the famous parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. Jesus helps us to understand that it can be very easy for us to slip into bad habits, especially when it comes to boasting about our strengths and comparing ourselves to others. He wants us to understand that God calls us to see ourselves as we truly are and to ask for his grace to grow into the people he is calling us to be, modelled by the Tax Collector.

This week has afforded us the opportunity to consider more deeply the ways we can sometimes put ourselves first: dashing to the front of the lunch queue, snatching the best stationery or hogging the playground equipment. Children have been challenged this week to see this behaviour for what it is and to ask for God's grace to grow in humility.

Ancient Science

This week in Science, Year 3 have been learning about fossilisation. To start our lesson, we learnt that there are different types of fossils, including trace, cast and mold. Then the children had a go at creating their fossils by pressing animals, natural things or dinosaurs into baker’s clay. They were so excited to see them cooked and the object they had pushed in still clearly visible.

Reception's Nest

The children were inspired by our ‘n’ sound this week and took it upon themselves to build a nest outside. Using wheelbarrows to help collect the leaves faster, the children worked together and listened to each other's great ideas. Imaginations were in full swing, thinking about who would live in this nest… a giant bird, dinosaur or even a nest for children! What do you think?

Pumpkin Perfection

Congratulation to the school's intrepid allotment team, who have carefully tended this year's impressive pumpkin harvest. They were then challenged to carve the school logo into them - and the outcomes amazed us all!

Lego Force

Last Friday, Year 5 visited Legoland as part of our Science curriculum on forces. We had workshops run by Legoland staff on how rollercoasters use forces. The children were very knowledgeable and enjoyed seeing how it is gravity that makes a rollercoaster work. They even had the chance to build some of their own rollercoasters out of Lego to see the forces in action! They had a wonderful time and built some interesting rollercoasters.

Silver Stories

Communicating Across Generations

This term, Jackson and Evie have been taking part in a special partnership with Silver Stories. Wonderfully simple but with the most incredibly positive impact for both Silver Listeners and Silver Readers. Children (known as Silver Readers) telephone a Silver Listener every week and then read a short story or poem to them.

This not only helps the children to become more confident in their reading skills but also links our children to the older members of our communities and helps diminish their chances of feeling isolated.

In RE we have been learning about vocation and commitment - what a wonderful example of this in their lives. Thank you also to our parent volunteers for making the commitment and giving up their time to facilitate this.

Symbols of Baptism

In RE this week, Year 1 have been getting creative while learning about the symbols of Baptism. As groups we worked together to make the different symbols of Baptism to decorate our displays. Can you recognise any of the symbols?

Picture Perfect

Year 4 have enjoyed learning all about editing photos during computing this week. This blended in well with their lesson on e-safety where they discussed the validity of photos. They particularly liked the smudge and blur tools and had fun editing mouldy fruit so that it looked almost editable again!

Florence to the rescue!

Year 2 have had a fantastic day exploring all things Florence! The children arrived as nurses, doctors and soldiers and proceeded to clean the hospitals, write letters to loved ones, bandage up the wounded, make medals and then make and taste ginger beer. The children loved getting in to character and it was certainly a lovely way to finish their first half term.

Hockey at HT!

On Monday 17th October, our school Hockey Team were kindly invited to Holy Trinity to play in a Hockey Festival.

Both school teams played with energy and enthusiasm and excellent sportsmanship, with healthy competition and a great chance to practise the skills developed this half-term at our Hockey Club.

A very big thank you to Mrs Currie and Mrs Peedell, our hockey coaches, for organising this opportunity and supporting the team, and thank you to Holy Trinity for hosting us.

Well done, St Joe's - you played brilliantly!

Art Attack!

Thank you to all those families who came to visit the Big Draw Gallery on Friday afternoon. There was such a buzz about the hall! Congratulations to the class group winners in each year, whose final pieces were proudly displayed in the gallery. In addition, every child's artwork was displayed on iPad screens for visitors to admire. Thank you to all involved, especially Miss Shail, for making this such a special event.

In total, £101.46 was raised for The Big Draw Charity!

Humility in 6R

Our thanks to St Rose's Class for a beautifully crafted worship this morning, exploring the practical ways that humility can be seen in the community around us. The children helped us to understand that we are all on the same team - God's team. Safe in this knowledge, we can find the strength and motivation to consider ourselves less and put others first.

Humble Servants

Congratulations to this week's Witness Award winners. All of these wonderful young people have demonstrated humility in their words and actions around the school, putting the needs of others before their own.
