C - 26th Ordinary

The Advice of Christ

In worship this week, we have been heeding advice from the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C. Jesus shares the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. On finding himself separated from God, the rich man pleads his cause and that of his brothers. However, Abraham explains, "Let them listen to Moses and the prophets."

No matter who we are (or how old we might be) learning to accept advice is a skill and one that requires practice and humility. We are offering all children some advice this week: reading regularly at home (at least four times per week) will help you to feel confident and independent. It will help you grow into the young person God wants you to be.

Looking into the mirror

This week in Art, Year 1 have been exploring self-portraits. Looking in mirrors, we identified our facial features, their shapes and colours. We then created our self-portraits out of oil pastels, thinking carefully about skin tones and hair colours. We wonder if you can guess who any of them are?

Making Tracks

The children have been busy settling into nursery, learning routines, getting to know each other and, most importantly, having fun!

They have been fascinated by the construction vehicles working beyond the garden fence: watching them move and operate in different ways. We have taken the opportunity to recreate our own construction site with sand and vehicles.

Bienvenu!

Year 4 greatly enjoyed their first French lesson - revising the French greetings. They particularly loved creating their 'greetings song.'

The search continues...

This week Year 2 have continued learning about the story 'Little Red Reading Hood'. We went to the library and watched some videos to experience what libraries are like and how Little Red Reading Hood would have felt. The children came up with a range of vocabulary which will support them in their writing through the rest of the unit .

Natural Art

The children in Year 3 have created cave paintings this week. After using sand and PVA glue to make a rough cave wall, the children excitedly set off to search for natural materials around the school grounds to use for their paintings. They used feathers, stones, berries, mud, leaves and different sized twigs to create their cave painting. Some children tried to attach a feather to a stick to create a brush! Many children commented in their evaluations how hard it was to paint with a stick but it was a lot of fun!

A word of advice...

In Year 6, we encourage the children to take ownership over their class Collective Worship. Once the weekly Gospel message and theme have been shared with the children in Monday's assembly, they work together to create a personal response to share with the class. This week's theme was advice. St Rose's class created a wonderful and thought-provoking session in which they played a game called 'blind advice'. They asked the children to write down a piece of advice that has helped them, collected them all in and then chose a selection to read out. Following this, we discussed who would follow that advice or not and why. We have collected all the snippets of wisdom and made an advice jar for our prayer table.

How are you feeling today?

Reception have been loving the Colour Monster story this week, and have been using it to support their understanding of emotions. Each monster represents a different emotion, take a look at the photos and see if you can match an emotion to the children exploring outside?

Everyday Saints

Year 5 have been looking how an ordinary person can make exceptional choices and act in the image of God due to their beliefs. We have been exploring the life of St. Kolbe, who took the place of another man to be put to death. Here is an example of some of the fabulous research and work the children have produced this week.

6N's Advice

Our thanks to St Non's Class for a brilliant worship this morning. They helped us to understand that advice is a gift. Although it can be hard to receive, advice is often exactly what we need in order to live a better life. The children shared many examples of where this be seen in our world, not least of all soggy bottoms on the Great British Bake Off!

6N also shared with us their words of wisdom: advice to help us enjoy our school lives as we build the kingdom of God here at St Joseph's.
